Hello GitHub Community,

I’m currently logged into my GitHub account, but my registered Gmail account has been disabled, so I can no longer access it. When I try to add a new email address, GitHub sends the confirmation code to my old, inaccessible Gmail. How can I change my email address and verify the new one without access to my old email?

you're still logged in, which helps. Here's what you can do.

Step 1: Try changing the email while logged in

Follow GitHub's Changing your primary email address guide:

1. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
2. In the "Access" section of the sidebar, click Emails.
3. Under "Add email address", enter your new Gmail and click Add.
4. Verify the new address using the link GitHub sends to it.
5. Under "Primary email address", select the new one and click Save.
6. Remove the old address with the trash icon beside it.

Be aware: GitHub may ask you to confirm sensitive changes by sending a code to your old email. The community threads below report that when this happens, the code goes to the old address, which is the problem you're hitting.

Step 2: If GitHub asks for a code sent to the old email

Stop retrying. Use these in order:

• Check for 2FA recovery codes. If you set up two-factor authentication, you may have saved recovery codes. Any one of them can usually pass a verification prompt.
• Contact GitHub Support. Go to https://help.github.com/support/contact/product-selection/sign-in-issues and choose the option for lost access to your email or relevant. Include your username, the old email, and anything showing the account is yours (old SSH keys, past repos, commit history). The community can't verify ownership or change your account; only Support can.

What the community threads show

• Discussion #180437 describes the same situation (primary email lost, verification code going to it). The suggested route is a Support ticket under "Account Access."
• Discussion #57537 reports that changing the primary email doesn't always need the old address confirmed, but one user says the verification code still went to the old address. Results vary.

Important

Don't create a second account with your new Gmail to get around this. It splits your repositories and contribution history, and the Support route is the one that keeps your existing account intact.
