GitHub Account Suspensions Without Explanation: Lack of Transparency and Accountability #210691

I agree that transparency and a clear appeal process are essential. Users should be able to understand the issue and request a meaningful review when their accounts are suspended. GitHub should provide clearer appeal-status updates, estimated response times, and understandable explanations of the relevant policies without exposing sensitive abuse-detection details. GitHub team, could you clarify what safeguards exist for potentially mistaken suspensions and consider introducing a transparent appeal-tracking system? Developers deserve to know that their appeals are being reviewed and what steps they can take next. |

Here is a grounded, constructive response you can post in that discussion thread. It addresses why these suspensions happen, how the appeals system functions, and what steps developers can take to get their accounts reviewed: Account suspensions without specific context are frustrating—especially when private repos, portfolio work, or daily workflows depend on access. While community members and moderators here cannot inspect or unlock specific accounts, here is how GitHub’s suspension and review systems operate, and what you can do next. Why Suspensions Happen Without Clear Explanations Automated Flagging Triggers: Security Research / Dual-Use Tooling: Publishing PoC exploit code, scanner scripts, credential lists, or security payloads can easily trip malware detection heuristics (Acceptable Use Policies around malware and active exploitation). High Velocity Actions: Creating multiple repositories, pushing hundreds of commits in rapid succession, or bulk-forking via scripts. Network & Payment Signals: Using data-center VPNs, Tor nodes, or shared IP blocks associated with botnets/crypto-mining, or payment anomalies with GitHub Actions/Copilot. Actions Abuse: Repositories running Actions that consume high compute or mirror CI abuse patterns (e.g., hidden crypto miners, automated scraping). Why Details Are Omitted: GitHub (like most large platforms) rarely provides exact rule-trigger details in suspension notices. The standard policy rationale is to prevent malicious actors and bot farms from reverse-engineering the detection thresholds. Unfortunately, this leaves legitimate developers and security researchers in the dark when false positives occur. What Actually Happens During the Appeal Process? Backlog & Timeline: Response times fluctuate heavily depending on queue depth. Routine ticket response can take anywhere from a few business days to several weeks, especially if the case requires a Trust & Safety specialist rather than general support. Avoid Spamming Tickets: Creating multiple duplicate tickets or replying to the same email repeatedly often resets the ticket timestamp or merges tickets, which can push your place back in the queue. Keep communications confined to a single thread. Actionable Next Steps If your work involves security research, state clearly in your existing appeal: The purpose of your repositories (educational, responsible disclosure, defensive tooling). Confirm that your code follows GitHub's Acceptable Use Policies on Security Research. Request Access to Data: If an account cannot be reinstated, users can often request temporary read/export access to download their personal repositories and commit history so critical project work isn't lost. Mention this explicitly in your existing support ticket. Reference the Ticket ID: If a GitHub staff member checks the community forum, they cannot look up an account by handle alone without a formal verification link, but they can occasionally check the status if an official Support Ticket ID is referenced. |

GitHub Suspensions Without Explanation and Appeals That Go Nowhere
Hello GitHub Community,
How many developers have to complain about unexplained suspensions and unanswered appeals before GitHub takes this problem seriously?
My account,
@l1ve709, was suspended, and despite contacting Support and explaining how I use GitHub for development, open-source contributions, and security research, I'm still waiting for a meaningful response. And this isn't just about me. There are users across this community reporting similar experiences. People lose access to their repositories, contributions, projects, and work they depend on — sometimes without understanding what they supposedly did wrong. Then they contact Support and are left waiting, with little visibility into whether anyone is actually looking into their case.
A suspension shouldn't mean losing access to your work without a clear explanation. An appeal shouldn't feel like sending messages into a void.
If GitHub's automated systems can make mistakes, there needs to be a reliable way to correct them. Users deserve clear explanations, timely responses, and a genuine review process — not silence.
I'd like to hear from others who have experienced this. Did Support resolve your case? How long did it take? Did you ever receive a meaningful explanation?
GitHub is a critical platform for developers around the world. The company should be held accountable for how it enforces its rules, especially when those decisions can affect people's education, careers, and open-source work.
We shouldn't have to go viral just to get a response from Support.
