Brief Summary
This paper is in the domain of mechanistic interpretability, specifically proposing a mechanism through which symbolic computation (maths, code, grammar etc) can be realised in neural networks. They include experiments by which they demonstrate this for various NN architectures including transformers.
Relevance to Group
Those of us who attended the recent summer school on analytical connectionism here in Gothenburg will recognise this representation (Tensor Product Representations) from Paul Smolensky's lectures. I wasn't fully convinced from the lectures, perhaps it is however worth giving this paper a chance? It seems relevant for both those of us interested in mechanistic interpretability as well as neuro-symbolic systems.
