Vertical workspaces and/or option to remove workspace transition

I like placing my panel on the side, Ubuntu style, and using the workspace switcher applet. That means the workspaces are laid out vertically on the panel, but the animation to switch between them plays horizontally, which looks very confusing and jarring.

An option to have the workspaces arranged vertically, or for the transition to play vertically, would be very nice.

Alternatively, adding a toggle in the 'Effects' settings page to remove workspace animations would also help, as right now you have to turn off all effects if you want no workspace transition.
