Should Plane Remove "OpenSource" from their documentation?

To be honest, I'm a little more than disappointed that I went through all the pains to install this and have a meeting with my team and get everyone to start setting things up, only to be hit by paywalls as we actually start getting into it and trying to make this an effective tool for us. I honestly feel like it's a bit of a betrayal to the term open source. Sure, you can have a paid version, but you shouldn't be shoving it in front of everyone's face in the self-hosted version.

If it's open source, don't hide all these features behind paywalls. Maybe it's just me, but it's why I decided to come here and create a poll.

Because, in my personal opinion, they should not be advertising this as an open source tool. It's a bait and switch.

What this is, is a free trial that is good but not really enough.

You don't really find that out until you actually install it and jump in.

Thanks for sharing your concern. There is an important distinction here between an edition and a plan.

Plane is a work infrastructure company with multiple offerings. We provide an open-source Community Edition, but we do not represent every Plane edition or commercial feature as open source.

• Community Edition is open source under AGPL v3.0, requires no license key, and has its own source code and installation path.
• Commercial Edition is a separate edition. It includes a Free plan, alongside paid Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans.

Community Edition and the Commercial Free plan are therefore not interchangeable. The upgrade prompts described here appear to come from the Commercial Edition’s Free plan—not from features being withheld from the open-source Community Edition.

This distinction is covered in our self-hosting overview, and the Community Edition has separate installation instructions.

We will continue making the edition selection as clear as possible during installation. However, describing Plane Community Edition as a trial or “bait and switch” is not accurate. It remains free, open source, auditable, and modifiable.

Since this poll is based on conflating Community Edition with the Commercial Edition’s Free plan, we’re closing the discussion after providing this clarification. If there is a specific page that incorrectly labels the Commercial Edition as Community Edition, please share it with us so we can correct it.
