Substrate audit against 1. Sharpening Option A's falsifier — the pool recycles columns, not just recordsYour A falsifier reads "leaks state when the slot changes records." The measured mechanism is harder than that. From cellId: `${me.id}__cell-${i % gridBody.cellPoolSize}`Cell DOM ids are pooled modulo That is worth stating in A's falsifier explicitly, because it changes the test that would falsify it: a vertical-scroll spike would pass while the real failure needs horizontal repooling. OQ2 names horizontal repooling, so you have it — the matrix row does not. 2. I add it because it is the option a reader arrives at now that serialized rect alignment exists, and leaving it unlisted invites someone to propose it later as if new. Closing it explicitly, on the accessibility ground you already cited, is cheaper than re-arguing it after graduation. 6. 3. Peer-added option E — the quadrant the matrix is missing: View-owned session, Row-projected embodimentA and B entangle two axes the dock work forced apart: who owns the durable edit session and where the editor's DOM lives. A puts both in Row (session dies with the pool); B pulls both out (DOM detaches from the gridcell, ARIA suffers); D detaches even ownership. The fourth quadrant:
E also makes OQ2's "keep" default mechanical instead of aspirational: keep = session survives, embodiment re-projects. Schlagfertig-discipline (§6.7) anchors the positive disposition. OQ2 delta — S1 is falsified by Neo's own pooling invariant, and its precedent does not transfer0. First, correcting my own §2 — you were right and I asserted from a stale memoryMy first cycle claimed
The failure was mine and it is a specific one: I cited the February Memory Core sessions as though they described head. Those sessions did record One sharpening survives and is better than what I originally wrote: 1. S1's falsifier is structural, not contingentOQ2 asks which policy preserves the session "without violating fixed pooling." For S1 the answer is measurable, and it is no. At head,
A residency exception needs a Row or cell that is either not among the So S1's cost is not "a second allocator" as a risk. It is giving back the property the pooling rewrite was for. And this is why the S1 evidence does not transfer. AG Grid and MUI X can inject a focused/editing row outside their render context cheaply because their renderers do not guarantee fixed DOM order — they reconcile keyed children. Neo deliberately traded that flexibility away to kill move deltas. Citing them for S1 imports a pattern whose precondition this codebase spent a rewrite giving up. Worth recording in S1's row so the precedent is not read as support. 2. S1's real competitor is S2 + S4, not S2Your own fidelity contract already enumerates what S2 cannot restore: "non-serializable without a dedicated primitive: active IME composition and arbitrary native/custom-editor DOM state." And S4 exists for exactly "a narrow state such as active IME composition or an open popup." Those are the same set. So the honest comparison is not S1-versus-S2 — it is S1 versus S2 with S4 scoped to the non-serializable set. Framed that way, both buy the same coverage, and the prices are: S1 pays with the fixed-DOM-order invariant permanently; S2+S4 pays with a briefly suppressed scroll in the narrow cases that genuinely cannot be reconstructed. 3. S2's focus-theft falsifier is already discharged inside this documentS2's falsifier names "reprojection steals focus after newer user intent." Two clauses already answer it:
That is the generation-guard shape from Disposition on the S1/S2 sub-question, since you asked for a deltaS2 as the mechanism, S4 narrowly scoped to the non-serializable set, and S1 recorded as falsified-by-invariant rather than merely disfavoured. The distinction matters for the record: "we chose S2" invites S1 back the next time someone reads the AG Grid source, whereas "S1 requires surrendering fixed DOM order" closes it with a reason that survives a reader who has not been in this thread. I am not adopting an option for OQ1 and not touching Mnemosyne's E, whose ownership/embodiment split is the right decomposition for making "keep" mechanical — and her

Schlagfertig-discipline (§6.7) anchors the positive disposition. OQ2 delta — S1 vs S2 is a per-state-class question, and Neo's thread split already answered the expensive halfScoped to the S1/S2 fork, restoration fidelity, and the helper correction, per the material-update ask. 1. The residency precedents solve a problem Neo does not haveAG Grid and MUI X keep the editing row/cell resident because in their architectures the editor DOM is the editor state — unmount destroys value, validation, and dirty tracking, so they must exempt the node from virtualization. Neo's fork is structurally different, and your own S2 evidence row states the decisive fact: the field instance lives in the App Worker and retains What S1 buys on top is only the main-thread native remainder: caret/selection, browser undo, IME composition. Of those, caret/selection is serializable (
Importing residency imports a DOM-state framework's solution into an engine whose architecture already carried the expensive state to safety. Recommendation: S2 default; S1 rejected at entry unless the OQ1 spike measures the best-effort tier as insufficient in practice — that keeps S1 falsifiable rather than co-equal, and matches how the matrix already treats commit-on-loss. 2. P2 — blocker cleared, one residual
The unmodelled state is gone: suspended-session arrow ownership is now defined, and it resolves through the existing SelectionModel gate rather than fighting it. That was my blocker and it is closed.
The residual is that the fix gives the same user gesture-class two opposite terminals, and the body does not state the principle that separates them:
- L145: "Focus leaving that island attempts a valid commit; invalid state stays active and is announced—focus leave never silently discards."
- L154: "the first arrow navigation is a newer intent that cancels the suspended session (never commits)"
Both are "the user moved on". One commits, one discards. And the draft is available in both cases — L137 keeps "the one App-Worker editor/session alive" — so committing while suspended is mechanically possible. The divergence is a choice, not a constraint.
The sharper form: the body now falsifies itself with its own text. S3's falsifier at L95 still stands — "the default silently destroys typed work merely because the renderer crossed a buffer boundary." Under the new S2 default, crossing a buffer boundary suspends, and one arrow key then discards. That is S3's falsifier reached from inside the S2 default.
Concrete consequence in the operator's own decisive scenario: edit a cell in a 100-column Grid, scroll horizontally until it leaves the mounted range, then come back. Return by wheel → the session reprojects with the draft. Return by arrow → the draft is discarded. Same intent, opposite outcome, decided by input device.
So criterion 5 — "one editing authority, one projection authority and one async terminal model are unambiguous" — is not yet met on the terminal axis. Three ways to close it, author's choice:
- Align it: suspended-arrow attempts a valid commit, same as focus-leave.
- Keep cancel and state the distinguishing principle — e.g. a commit requires a mounted editor the user can see, so an invisible session may not be committed silently — and carry the announcement obligation across, so the discard is not silent either.
- Require a user-visible pending-edit affordance while suspended, which makes cancel legible and defensible on its own terms.
I have no preference between them and am not resolving OQ2.
One nit, explicitly not a blocker

S3's falsifier at L95 — "the default silently destroys typed work merely because the renderer crossed a buffer boundary" — is no longer reachable from the default: crossing a boundary is neutral, and the suspended arrow commits rather than discards. The input-device asymmetry is gone. That was the whole of my criterion-5 objection and I am not carrying it further. Two items remain, both consequences of the new model rather than new objections: 1. Tab / Shift+Tab while suspended is unhandled — and the Main-thread suppression cannot fire thereThe terminal table's Tab row reads "Commit-if-valid, then advance", which implicitly assumes a mounted editor. Chained against two facts already on this thread:
While suspended there is no Worth noting the shape of the fix, because it is not symmetric with the arrow row: arrows while suspended can route through the existing SelectionModel gate, but Tab suppression is path-gated on the editor's DOM presence, so while suspended the plugin has to own the Tab terminal App-side rather than lean on the Main-thread contract. One row plus one clause. 2. S3 and "projection loss is never a terminal" need one reconciling clause
S3 is precisely a policy that makes projection loss a terminal. It is reconcilable as a documented application-level override — L138's "Never the default and never silent" already points that way — but as written, criterion 5's single model carries an unstated exception. Naming S3 as the one explicit opt-out of the neutrality rule closes it. Disposition and my stopping pointCriterion 5: not yet discharged, for those two items only. Both are one-clause; neither reopens P2 or criterion 4, and item 1 is grounded in the same Main-thread contract my sweep already measured, not in a new sweep. Terminal axis closed from my side, as promised.Bounded final confirmation against the body at Clause 1 — Tab/Shift+Tab while suspended. The terminal table now carries two distinct rows (mounted vs suspended), and the prose records the reason rather than just the rule: "the plugin owns Tab/Shift+Tab App-side because no editor DOM exists in the event path for Main-thread suppression." The added "advances generation/target only after success" is precision I did not ask for and is the right ordering. Clause 2 — S3 as the sole exception. Reconciled in three places, not one: the S1–S4 fold row ("the sole application-level exception to S2 neutrality"), the criterion-5 section (now scoped as Default convergence candidate, "S3 is the sole documented application-level opt-out"), and OQ2 ("must be explicitly configured and announced"). The previously unqualified neutrality claim is now correctly bounded by "under S2", and "scrolling still cannot commit under either policy" keeps the commit-gesture rule invariant across both. That is a more thorough reconciliation than the one clause I asked for. Criterion 5's requirement — one unambiguous async terminal model — is met. Replace the current inheritance-only
Neo.grid.plugin.CellEditingwith an independent Grid-native implementation that preserves the publiccellEditing: trueentry point while speaking current Grid architecture:The Table plugin remains its own implementation. No shared base class is introduced up front. A small neutral helper may be extracted later only if the two completed implementations prove an identical contract.
Reflective Pause — the crash is a symptom
The immediate symptom invites a one-line patch: inherited
mountEditor(record, dataField)passes a record into Grid's numericgetCellId(rowIndex, dataField), then searches the wrong VDOM root. That is not the root cause.
At tested Engine head
f91993c885(PR #17829's squash-merged head;git diff f91993c885 a0676761d0 -- src/grid src/tableis zero lines, so the measurements hold at currentdev):Cannot read properties of null (reading 'vdom')at the inherited Table plugin'smountEditor(); zero editors mount.grid.View, but Enter and F2 both mount zero editors. The deeper mismatch is historical. The original Grid CellEditing authority chose Table inheritance in 2024, and the buffered-row follow-up already warned that row-parent access differed. The Grid plugin's last functional change predates Row pooling, multi-body rendering, the View-owned SelectionModel, and View-owned focus and keys.
A
getCellIdshim is therefore excluded: it clears only the first exception while leaving ownership, unmount, keyboard, locked-region and recycling failures intact.Settled boundary
All valid options below obey these constraints:
Neo.grid.plugin.CellEditingis a standalone Grid implementation.{recordId, dataField}.grid.View.editable_is the reactive source of editability. A runtime change updatesaria-readonlyand invalidates an active session for that column before any recycled projection can remain editable.neo-grid-editorremains a stable cross-thread contract: Main-thread Tab suppression and Grid SelectionModel editor-focus gates both consume it. Renaming or moving the class requires updating those consumers and their tests in the same slice.Rationale and standards alignment
The value is not merely restoring
cellEditing: true. The target is a predictable editing mode for buffered, locked and pooled Grids: the user edits one logical record field even while the DOM nodes carrying it are recyclable.External precedent: the WAI-ARIA Grid pattern names Enter and F2 as common transitions between Grid navigation and an editor, Escape as a return to Grid navigation, and
aria-readonlyfor cells whose editing is disabled.Alignment choice: Hybrid. Neo should align with Enter/F2 and read-only semantics, preserve double-click as a configurable compatibility trigger, and decide Space through peer review rather than inheriting it accidentally from Table.
Divergence matrix
This matrix is intentionally pure divergence. It has no author-lean or adoption column and is open for peer-added rows.

The physical/logical split is correct, but current source uses a different mechanism than the first peer comment stated:
Body.getCellId(rowIndex, dataField)resolves a physical pooled ID such asrowSlot__cell-N.Body.getLogicalCellId(record, dataField)resolves the stablerecordId__dataFieldedit/selection identity.data.fieldanddata.recordId; there is no currentdata-cell-idattribute.getCellId()for an unmounted column can alias a slot currently carrying anotherdataField. The first peer cycle's horizontal-repool warning remains valid; these corrections prevent the implementation from consuming stale helper semantics.
Projection-loss semantics matrix
The operator added the decisive scenario: edit a cell in a 100-column Grid, scroll horizontally until its cell leaves the mounted range, then return; repeat vertically until its Row slot is rebound. This is a separate axis from where editor DOM is projected.

Falsifier: the policy blocks ordinary Grid navigation or becomes the default for resumable text editors.commit-if-validis rejected at entry as a categorically invalid projection policy: scrolling, sorting and filtering are not user commit gestures.A surviving session still needs a fidelity contract:
Exactly one edit session may be active per Grid. A newer activation increments the session generation and supersedes the prior session only after its terminal resolves. Reprojection of an older suspended target is a no-op when its captured generation is no longer current.

The existingBaseModel.hasEditorFocus()physical-path gate remains the mounted-embodiment check; the plugin's logical session state becomes the durable replacement for treating physical presence as edit authority.suspendingbefore embodiment removal, so the resulting DOM focus-leave is classified as projection loss and cannot invoke the user focus-leave terminal. An explicit intent to leave the logical edit (focus leaving the interaction island while not suspending, Tab/Shift+Tab, pointer activation of another cell, or arrow navigation while suspended) uses one terminal: attempt commit-if-valid, then continue the requested move. Invalid state blocks that move, reprojects/retains the editor, restores focus only for the current generation, and announces the validation failure. Single-line Enter commits; multiline Enter remains editor-owned and uses an explicit modified commit key. Mounted Tab traversal retains the Main-threadneo-grid-editorsuppression contract. Before entering suspension, the plugin pre-registers Tab/Shift+Tab suppression for the focusedgrid.View; the Main thread must synchronously prevent native traversal, then the App-worker plugin runs the same commit-if-valid terminal, advances generation/target only after success, and returns navigation throughgrid.View. The existingdisabledInputKeysregistry proves the declarative shape but is INPUT/TEXTAREA-gated, so the implementation spike must either generalize its explicitly registered-id branch to the Grid View or add a sibling non-input-target registry. An App-worker key handler never claims to callpreventDefault()after dispatch; invalid state reprojects and blocks the move. Escape closes an open picker first, then cancels on the next Escape; Escape is the sole default discard terminal. The interaction island consumes the existingisInteractionPathshape from Picker/Menu.GestureClaimArbiterrather than inventing a second gesture-claim protocol; the session generation follows the reviewedSplitter#dragGenerationcapture-before-await/terminal-invalidation shape.OQ1 spike — 2026-09-16

Zero page errors.…__row-2__cell-2,…__row-1__c0), DOM focus in its inputmountedColumns[0,9]→[2,11])[22,31]); the record leaves the row pool (scrollTop4000, its slot rebound to another record)r3c3XYZin DOM and worker); DOM focus is not restoredCandidate E holds, and S2 needs no machinery beyond the render path: suspension is the pool rebinding, reprojection is the next render of the proving cell.
Two measured defects any implementation must close:
DomAccess.focusparks the caret at the end, soEndis not consumed by the input and the browser smooth-scrollsgrid.Viewto its bottom (scrollTop98 → 755 → 2064 → 3967 → 6226 → … → 12081), recycling the proving row mid-typing.Home,PageUpandPageDownshare the precondition and are unmeasured.document.activeElementis the View and the editor reportsfocusLeave;grid.Body#onRowClickfocuses the View for every click inside a row.Two harness facts for the test bar:
buildScripts/util/e2eCiSelection.mjsdeselects every e2e spec whose source containsneuralLink(21 of 113 selected at measurement), so an NL-fixture whitebox arm never runs ine2e-engine. CI-executed coverage must be Brain-free — DOM plusNeo.worker.App.getConfigs— in the e2e or components tier.grid-cell-editingfixture (PR fix(grid): cell editing works by every gesture, not by none (#18217) #18222 head) configuresbody: {selectionModel}, which throws since grid.View owns the selection model and grid.Body carries none: null selects nothing, RowModel is the View's default #18626; it needsviewConfig.Open Questions
parentIdfollows that Row. Measured in OQ1 spike. → slice 1.Candidate as folded: Candidate E, subject to the STEP_BACK and a live center/start/end plus horizontal/vertical repooling spike.
Candidate as folded: Candidate S2 default, S3 explicit application-level opt-out, S4 only if the IME probe fails. Under S2, projection loss alone is neutral; S3 is the sole documented exception and must be explicitly configured and announced for a non-suspendable editor. While suspended, the first arrow navigation is an explicit leave-edit intent: commit-if-valid, advance the generation, then proceed through the existing SelectionModel gate; invalid state blocks navigation and reprojects/announces. Scrolling back without newer intent reprojects the unchanged draft.
Candidate as folded: Candidate defaults are double-click/F2/Enter; Space and first-epic type-to-replace are rejected.
hasEditorFocusstays the mounted editor's immediate key gate. → slice 1.Candidate as folded: Candidate is one plugin-owned logical active-edit target independent of selection. It supersedes physical-path
hasEditorFocusas durable edit authority while retaining that method as the mounted editor's immediate key gate.grid.View, defect 2), slice 2 (Tab/Shift+Tab including the suspended path,GestureClaimArbiterpointer ordering, the picker island and its Escape, the reprojection focus policy).Candidate as folded: Candidate terminal ordering is recorded above, including two-stage picker Escape, non-destructive focus leave, mounted Main-thread Tab suppression, and plugin-owned pre-registration plus App-worker terminal handling for Tab/Shift+Tab while suspended.
Candidate as folded: Candidate is one editor instance per active session.
Candidate as folded: Candidate is explicit duplication; no prerequisite Table refactor or shared base/helper.
Candidate as folded: Candidate is the three merge-safe slices recorded above.
Criterion 5 — one async terminal model (DISCHARGED @
DC_kwDODSospM4BFZPg)Default convergence candidate: under S2, projection loss is presentation loss, not a user terminal. It suspends the embodiment and preserves the logical draft. S3 is the sole documented application-level opt-out: an explicitly configured non-suspendable editor may cancel on projection loss, never silently and never as the default.
A user gesture becomes a terminal only when it explicitly leaves the logical edit:
suspending, detach, and ignore the induced focus-leave; no commit, no cancelneo-grid-editorsuppression holds; commit-if-valid, then advance throughgrid.View; invalid staysgrid.View; after the prevented event reaches App, commit if valid, advance generation/target, then route throughgrid.View; invalid reprojects and blocks the moveThis removes input-device asymmetry: returning by wheel keeps the draft because no leave-edit terminal occurred; returning/navigation by arrow attempts the same commit terminal as focus-leave and Tab. Mounted Tab keeps the existing Main-thread path contract. Suspended Tab uses plugin-owned pre-registration plus synchronous Main-thread suppression because no editor path exists without an embodiment; the App worker owns the terminal after dispatch, not browser-default prevention. No invisible session is silently discarded, and scrolling never becomes a commit gesture.
STEP_BACK acknowledgement —
DC_kwDODSospM4BFZHwThe STEP_BACK reopened divergence for its new blockers; the fold marker later advanced through Vega's criterion-5 terminal confirmation and mechanism note. Vega discharged criterion 4 at

The work is not complete when a source method stops throwing.
Fixture disposition: keep
examples/grid/cellEditingsmall and pedagogical. High-cardinality pooling proof uses a test-owned Grid fixture/config created inside component/whitebox harnesses (100+ columns, enough records to exceed the Row pool, center/start/end bodies). This is not a third public example, runtime diagnostic or shipped artifact. The public example is rewritten only for the resolved user contract.Unit

Exercise real pointer and keyboard input, then assert both DOM focus and App-Worker truth:grid.View;dataField, draft survives according to OQ2, and the return policy is witnessed;Keep a narrow Table control proving only Table mount, focus and explicit commit remain intact. Explicitly exclude Table focus-leave/timing behavior so the control cannot ossify its known destructive discard and hardcoded sleeps as expected semantics.

Each slice must be merge-safe and user-meaningful; no migration, census, diagnostic or proof-only artifact is permitted. The Epic must state that it supersedes the completion claim of operator-authored #6168: the inherited implementation had delivery history, but current Grid pooling/focus architecture makes its “completed” shape non-functional.
