Willing to create a Discord for the project? Or opposed to someone else creating one?

I hate to sound negative but every time I see an open source project do that I can't help but feel like they are marching in the wrong direction in terms of mass adoption and participation. Using matrix or irc or whatever just seems like a good way to close a project's community off from being accessible

I understand the point of view both ways actually. I have been part of many communities in the past and have experienced the ups and downs. In prior years I would have had no choice to grow the project than to launch all these mediums.

Now however AI changes the game. I already have a team of engineers with AI. This project just had its first contributor fix a few issues and close tickets. IRC + github discussions have proven to be the right balance for me with Gershwin.

It's probably a good time to say that it is not desired to have social media other forums for this project at this time also. Anything that pre-existed from the original project is fine like the reddit.

Given it looks like it was last used 10 years ago, maybe it would be for the best to leave it as is for now. I am thinking I'd like make another request to see if I can get the original GitHub organization transferred over, before trying to bring things like this back if it was effectively disabled anyway.

There is a nextbsd channel on libera in irc. I would prefer to keep communications to IRC, github discussions for now, and not have unofficial channels for now. I am not a matrix user at the moment but that might be something to consider in the future. Thank you for asking.

To be honest, I would prefer to use libera myself, but for some reason it just doesn't work for me :(

When I first joined. I had to appeal to libera to get my IP whitelisted. I did this, took a day or so and I have been chatting for years since. Not sure if you are seeing something similar? Are you able to get to efnet? I’ve been told most of the other BSD’s have channels there so I could spin up another channel there if needed.

Yes, I fixed it via the whitelist too, but still… the lack of chat history in such IRCs is unfortunate, because I’m one of those people for whom it’s important to know how and why people arrive at a specific decision during a discussion

I use quassel server on one system and so all my devices can use the quassel client to attach and see chat history. There are other solutions but it works great for me.
