Thanks for the thorough reply. Good to know Tailscale wasn’t the problem. And the files were showing up in /Volumes/NCDATA so that was mounted correctly. But yes as you’ve probably worked out, I had opened the data directory finder multiple times to see if data was arriving. The errors were showing up on the computer trying to sync files to the server. Each time the first few MBs would arrive on the server (cause I checked!) but then the rest would fail and end up blacklisted according to the client. I had wondered if an ext4 filesystem would be the way forward but it was late and I was frustrated so this opencloud server has now been removed and deleted. Also I wondered how it would see the external drive in terms of permissions and ownership. The take aways seem to be to figure out the external data drive then. Either ext4 which my OS will want to reformat every time it tries to mount it, or with orbstack which I just had a play with and found that it creates a native virtual drive which can be on an external drive. |

Sorry, I took my earlier reply down because it was far too long, so here is the short version. Tailscale is fine, and since your files showed up on the drive, the mount worked too. The likely cause is Finder: OpenCloud treats everything in its data folder as user files, so the .DS_Store files Finder writes there get picked up on the next start. Keep Finder out of the data folder while OpenCloud runs, and OrbStack with its disk on the external drive sounds like a good way to do that. |
Uh oh!

I'm a home user, and new to deploying servers so I'm looking for some advice on what might have gone wrong for me with my last install before I try again.
I had lots of issues with .DS_Store files (os directory metadata) when syncing from another mac. I binned the whole thing in frustration so don't have any logs.
I had the data directory for the server set to an external APFS drive. Also the server was set to use my tailscale magicDNS name. Other than that everything was pretty standard.
Is there anything obviously wrong with using a tailscale network? And anything obviously wrong with using an external APFS drive?
The server ran on colima on a mac pro running MacOS Sonoma.
Here's my config in case it throws up anything:
Any info would be much appreciated.
