• I expect this to hide R code in the output

Solutions I've found include ensuring there isn't a line after the opening of the block, and that in a manuscript project type, all files other than index.qmd will have the code output as they are considered part of the notebook. Neither seem to apply here.

execute is not a key under website which are for website project specific configuration.
Move it out at top level as documented.

Also, echo controls source code not output. What you see are outputs of the code, not actual code. Use output as documented.

Thank you @mcanouil - I get the same output when I remove echo: false from the yml and revise the qmd to this.

I must be missing something, as I think I am using echo as documented; to prevent the R block from printing in the PDF or any other output document.

oh, maybe I sorted it. Is freeze: auto the default? When I use freeze: false in the yml, the pdf renders without the contents of the r block.

From the documentation I linked earlier and from my reply:

• echo -> Include the source code in output
• output -> Include the results of executing the code in the output (true, false, or asis to indicate that the output is raw markdown and should not have any of Quarto’s standard enclosing markdown).

A print output is not the source code.
