Application that doesn't take screen's focus like the mac spotlight app

Is there a way to have an application not take the windows focus when a window opens?

I'm making a spotlight clone for learning and would like the focuses application name/menu to not be changed to my application when a window opens just like when I open the mac spotlight app (or alfred). Alternatively is there a way to drop the apps focus from the system?

I currently have an app that:

• starts with no windows
• opens a window on global short cut, changes the name of the current app in top left of screen to my apps name (not desired)
• closes window after executing a command, but doesn't exit application, keeps my app name in top left of screen (not desired)

The answer is they use NSPanels instead of regular windows.
