we've been discussing this. What do we need to do?

I'd like to get #630 and #428 in, and also meet the upcoming freeze for debian

Fine with me. Do you want to do a pre-release?

I can get #630 ready. #428 needs to be more or less rewritten, it's still autoconf based.
