Why is Time greyed out on inactive screen?

I am just curious why the time is displayed greyed out on the inactive screen while the event is not, and follows the same shade of grey as Mac menu bar items. Inactive screen:

Because it is actually an image.

Same thing happens to the native keyboard layout icon.

That's to allow customizations like solid background.
