Unofficial bug-fix patch for Pokémon Ash Gray (beta 4.5.3) by metapod23 — fixes crashes, softlocks, and the "Bad Egg" save corruption in the released build, with no story/maps/balance changes beyond the fixes.

⚠️ Fan patch — no ROM is included. Apply the .ips to a clean Pokémon FireRed (USA) v1.0 ROM that you own.

Apply

  1. Get clean FireRed (USA) v1.0 — MD5 e26ee0d44e809351c8ce2d73c7400cdd, CRC-32 dd88761c.
  2. Apply pokemon-ashgray-bugfix-v1.0.ips (MD5 d013c124c4ce2b2c7b73166e64c4cc91) with Lunar IPS, Flips, or any IPS patcher.
  3. Verify the output: MD5 5cffa700fee4378fd9c48e8ba849a2d0, CRC-32 63478921, SHA-256 a08055484c8366768d3e98e2dbed0998641abd2899ffbfc8d7f132925875f7a1.

Saves use the same format as clean 4.5.3 (a .sav is interchangeable).

Highlights

  • Bad Eggs — root-caused and mitigated. Ash Gray's story progress overlaps PC storage; the patch reserves the three hazardous boxes (Box 2, 3, 6) so you can't deposit into a slot the game will overwrite.
  • Crashes fixed: breeding center (Jessie & James / Butch & Cassidy with a full party), Grampa Canyon "pickaxe from the rival", the underwater-cave black screen, the Tangelo Island arrival crash, a doll-competition talk-to-NPC freeze.
  • Softlocks fixed: Indigo Plateau guard with all 8 badges, Prof. Oak's league send-off, declining Dragonite's invite, the Cerulean Gym pool trap, a Pallet Town ledge trap, dangling warps.
  • Quality: running shoes on 44 maps, bike on 16 maps, the "broken" Teachy TV made safe, a wild-encounter level typo, text fixes.

Notes & caveats

  • The box-reserve protects new placements; it does not heal a save that already has a Pokémon in a hazard box. Move those out before patching if you can. Usable boxes drop 14 → 11.
  • The hack itself is unfinished (content ends partway through the Orange Islands).
  • Some things look like bugs but are intentional / anime-accurate (HMs as key items, Brock's scripted first-battle loss, Pikachu refusing Misty, Charizard disobedience).
  • RetroAchievements: the fork's hash isn't RA-recognized — use the unmodified 4.5.3 ROM (MD5 92262059190c05a5615be6b98612fb14) for RA credit.
