Inconsistent iOS Status Bar behaviour

Hi All,

Currently we have an issue with customers complaining that the status bar is behaving unpredictably.

This issue started some time last week.

To achieve desired behaviour/ expected behaviour of the statusbar appearing correctly above the app, users were advised to add the statusbar plugin.

Unfortunately this worked for some customers and not others.

A sample issue where it didn't work can be found here with the addition of the plugincausing status bar to appear pink in colour.

This didn't use to be the case(the need to add plugin for the status bar to work correctly).

May we know what was changed recently?

This issue is rather urgent any help would be appreciated.

Also the status bar plugin is for 3.0.0 and higher, I'm running 2.9.0 so there would be no fix for me? Please resolve quickly.

To help the developers out..

My App status bar was working fine - never had an issue with it.

Then last week I came to build for the last time before sending to Apple and I noticed the status bar was transparent with the web view sliding underneath. I hadn't changed any code since the last build. Had no idea what had happened until I noticed other people reporting it in the forums.

People were saying that adding the status bar plugin would solve the problem - some people reported that it did resolve the issue - but for most people it hasn't.

My App is built using Build 3.0 - I tried a combination a of builds using 3.0 / 3.1 / 3.2 / 3.3 and 3.4 with and without the <gap:plugin name="com.phonegap.plugin.statusbar" version="1.1.0" /> plugin.

I also noticed there are 2 plugins available:
com.phonegap.plugin.statusbar 1.1.0 and org.apache.cordova.statusbar 0.1.4

Neither seemed to work for me.

I've also tried using the < preference name="ios-statusbarstyle" value="black-opaque" / > preference and again had no luck.

At the moment my app ID:804362 is using build 3.0 with the plugin <gap:plugin name="org.apache.cordova.statusbar" version="0.1.4" /> and the pref . Im deleting the app before I reinstall.

The status bar is a solid pink/purple colour and it seems to be above the web view. This is the best state I've managed to get it too!

From reading other members posts this behavior appeared mid last week and has broke many apps! It would be much better to not have to add the plugin and extra code - I have a batch of App Ill have to update and resubmit because of this change, we're assuming its a change on the build server but we have no official word on what has changed and what we need to do to fix the issue.

@marklathamuk, you do seem to have code in your router.js file that is explictly changing the StatusBar to go pink:
StatusBar.backgroundColorByHexString('#CC99FF');

@luukvr no StatusBar Plugin for 2.9.0, that's correct.

What specificly is the issue you're having? Also any specific reason why you wouldn't upgrade to 3.0+? (ideally 3.4.0)

@wildabeast, Thanks, also been pointed out to me by someone else! That file is part of a group of files for a Twitter feed I have in the App. Changing to black sets the status bar to black ;-)

So - I changed my build from 3.0 to 3.4 and I've added the < gap:plugin name="org.apache.cordova.statusbar" version="0.1.4" / > plugin, those changes and the javascript makes the status bar appear normal as it was last week.

Removing the plugin make it go transparent again.

So I guess I have to make this change to all my Apps now?

Yes please make that change in your apps moving forward. We're investigating what might've caused a change in behaviour, possibly an unexpected side affect of a separate fix. Sorry for the inconvenience.

My status bar is black now which is how it was before BUT it doesn't behave the way it did before.... When the App initially opens the status bar is transparent for a fraction of a second - then it goes black and the page jumps down the height of the status bar...

The issue is that I now have to use a plugin to have proper placement of the statusbar (it hovers transparently through the webview in iOS otherwise). By not fixing the REAL problem and only saying the statusbar plugin should be used you are condemning all people that are using an older version than 3.0.0. For any reason they would want to.

For my case, yes i updated to a higher phonegap version, don't know if you fixed it for older versions, haven't checked, but if not... that would be a very bad thing and this issue should not be closed. Or you should deprecate all older versions because they are now useless.

I agree with @luukvr. Im still trying to get this to work correctly in my App... I have 5 other Apps to re check after this which ive spent nearly a week trying to sort now.

The plugin is a patch over a bug created from a fix from another bug, so I wouldn't say the issue is fixed, @wildabeast said there was a previous fix that has created this bug, rolling back that fix would fix ALL these status bar issues for ALL users and ALL apps, then they can work out a better fix for the previous issue? For me personally Id be saving days of redevelopment of my apps!

Plus, as no-one has been told about this change I assume people are going to flood in with this issue looking for fixes to a bug that wasn't there before?

Yeah and a plugin that is NECESSARY for all iOS apps to function properly is not a plugin at all.

So in any case this issue should not be closed.

@wildabeast - I used your test App and built it for my iPhone - the status bar has the same strange behavior - for a split second the status bar is transparent, then it goes black and the content jumps down.

Im kind of glad as its not just my App showing this behavior ;-(

Really do need to reopen this issue.
