Follow-up to #27.

The node-pre-gyp package is in use by the fsevents package, a common low-level dependency with C compilation steps. This may help to address or mitigate some of the concerns regarding how this library is compiled.

The goal of this issue is to examine this library's installation steps for any obvious steps that could improve compatibility, and to implement the resulting improvements.

💡 The requirements for running node-gyp are clearly described in the nodejs/node-gyp README, and any project with C compilation steps would have these same implicit requirements. Because node-gyp is a dependency of this library, its system-level dependencies are also required of this project.
