We talked briefly on this during the hackathon, currently plates/samples have a max column size of 12 which is the standard plate size. It would be nice to make columns/rows both string valued to make plate creation more flexible. Also allowing either row/col to be numerically or alphabetically labelled. You mentioned how orientation would be affected by changing this, so we might need an extra field that holds the top-left well.
