How do new contributors pick a first issue?

Hey! CONTRIBUTING covers setup nicely, but I'm curious how new contributors are meant to pick a first PR.

There's no good first issue or help wanted label, so for someone with the dev env running: is "grab any open bug" the right approach, or are there particular areas (Elixir/backend, React/dashboard, tracker, docs) where help is more welcome right now?

I'd love to start on the Elixir side myself. Happy to dig into whatever's useful.
