PlotlyJS does not handle empty subplots

Hello,

I have working with PlotlyJS in combination with MATLAB-Online.

I have a data which has been converted for PlotlyJS with MATLAB-online. The original data seems to contains empty subplots.

Several axis ((x1, y1), (x2, y2), (x3, y3)) have been defined but only (x1, y1) is used.
This seems to be an issue for latest PlotyJS.

Hmm. I'm not sure what you're trying to plot here.

You have 3 subplots, 1 (x1-y1) with two traces and 2 empty subplots. Subplot (x2-y2) has the same domain span as (x1-y1) making subplot x1-y1 essentially invisible.

So, what is the desired behaviour in your mind?

This data has been generated by MATLAB-Online.

In MATLAB, you can create empty subplots. This is a valid behavior.

Since MATLAB-Online is converting these empty subplots, I would expect PlotlyJS to handle them correctly.

Ok. Well, the "data" / "layout" in your codepen is generating the correct plot.

So the problem must be somewhere in the MATLAB API. I'd recommend opening an issue at:

If in fact PlotyJS can not handle empty subPlots, it would make sens for MATLAB-Online to delete them while converting the data.

However, it feel weird that PlotlyJS is not able to display the data for the subPlot containing valid data.

Hey @felixveysseyre, plotly.js can handle empty subplots. There may be an issue converting with our Matlab API. Would you be able to post an example of your Matlab code in our Matlab Online repo: https://github.com/plotly/MATLAB-Online/issues/new (and let us know which version of matlab you're using) and I can help you there!

Looking at the data, it seems correctly converted.
If I remove the definition of the sub plots (x2, y2), (x3, y3), the plot is working correctly.
I can conclude that the error is related to these sub plots and not to the data it self.

I will also create an issue on MATLAB-online.

by changing the domain values for the axes of the (x2, y2) and (x3, y3) subplots to something that does not completely overlap with the (x1, y1) subplot you can see the non-empty and empty subplots.
