Remove dependency on snap

We use very little of snap here - really the only thing we use it for is getting authentication credentials from a config file and for setting splices automatically. We should instead make the initializer take those credentials as arguments and return the splices, so that if you want to use snap & it's config files, you can, but you don't have to.
