Stick drift causing PINN to boot into recovery.

Hello everyone,

I recently started using PINN, and I’m really enjoying it so far! One of the operating systems I have installed is RetroPie, and I love the built-in controller support. However, I’ve run into a bit of an issue, it seems like all of my controllers have a slight stick drift.

Because of this, the recovery mode keeps triggering automatically whenever a controller is plugged in (the joysticks are registering movement even in their neutral position). The only way I can get it to boot normally is by unplugging all controllers before startup.

I’ve searched around for an option to disable this behavior but haven’t had any luck yet. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and found a good workaround?

In the meantime, I’m considering changing the recovery trigger to something like holding the Y button, or maybe a combination like A + B, since most controllers have those. I think that could be a really handy improvement.

sorry about the confusion. My issues isn't with retropie.
My issue is with PINN booting into recovery with a USB Microsoft controller being plugged in.

Have you read https://github.com/procount/pinn/blob/master/joy_keys.md#inputs-section ?
You can alter the deadzone setting for each axis to stop the jitter.

Yes I noticed this, and attempted to change the values multiple times but I'm unsure of the correct values to input.

I gradually increased the value until 6000 but I started to notice that fixing one direction would break another.

Also, If a different controller is plugged in I wonder if fine tuning the values will work for them all?

Which model of RPi are you using?
Which Joystick & which joystick file are you using?

PINN version: 3.9.3 - Version available on Raspberry Pi Imager
RPi model: Pi5
Joystick: PDP Rock Candy Wired Controller for Xbox 360
Joystick file: Microntek______________USB_Joystick___________6A_12B.json

I actually just saw that I have to create a joystick file. Ill get on that and let you know if it fixed the issue

Got it working!
Basically had to make a copy of Microsoft_X-Box_360_pad_8A_11B.json and rename it to Rock_Candy_Gamepad_Wired_Controller_8A_11B.json

Other users have reported problems with 3.9.4-3.9.7, which is why 3.9.3 is the version available through Rpi Imager etc. If you experience problems I suggest downgrading to 3.9.3 again.
