fili 0.2.0 (pre-release)

Replace the driver of a USB device or interface on Windows (like Zadig, but scriptable), from the command line or a small graphical window. Free software, GPL-3.0-or-later.

This is a pre-release. It changes drivers and adds a self-signed certificate to the PC's trusted stores. Use it only on your own devices, first on a device you can afford to lose. No warranty.

What's new since 0.1.0

  • fili restart (and the Restart button): enables a device that Windows shows as disabled, otherwise restarts it. Changes no driver.
  • fili reinstall (and the Reinstall button) now also works on a device that uses its manufacturer's or Windows' driver: it removes the device and lets Windows detect it again. No certificate is added.
  • fili update and Help > Check for updates: tell you whether a newer version is published. Only when you ask; one anonymous request to GitHub; nothing is downloaded or installed. The optional box "Check for updates at startup" is off by default. See PRIVACY.md.
  • Version information (publisher, product, version) in the executables and in the installer.

Download

  • fili-setup-0.2.0.exe: installer (copies fili.exe, fili-gui.exe, wdi-simple.exe to C:\Program Files\fili, Start-menu shortcuts, optional PATH entry). It changes no driver and adds no certificate.
  • SHA256SUMS: check the download with Get-FileHash fili-setup-0.2.0.exe -Algorithm SHA256.

The files are not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may show "unknown publisher" and some antivirus programs may flag executables built with PyInstaller. The checksums detect a corrupted or altered download; they are not a signature of the author. The full source is in this repository.

What was tested

On Windows 11 Pro and in a Windows Server 2022 virtual machine, with real changes to a virtual device, a built-in composite device, two identical USB network adapters and a USB flash drive: install with WinUSB, libusbK, libusb-win32 and usbser, reinstall, restore, certificate removal, identical devices (only the selected one changes), running without administrator, protected classes, failing wdi-simple, Secure Boot on, hung drivers (usb-reset).

Not verified

restart and reinstall of a manufacturer's driver on real hardware (only previews and automated tests so far), Windows 10, Memory Integrity, --wcid on a device that advertises WCID, ARM64 and 32-bit Windows, code signing. --filter is not supported on network adapters.

Notes

  • Requires administrator for any change. Protected classes (keyboard, mouse, disk, Bluetooth) are refused without --force.
  • The graphical interface is in English.
  • Third-party components: libwdi (LGPL), libusb-win32, libusbK; licenses and sources are in the LICENSES and THIRD_PARTY folders of the installation.

La casella facoltativa «Check for updates at startup» è spenta di default. Vedi PRIVACY.md.
  • Informazioni di versione (editore, prodotto, versione) negli eseguibili e nell'installer.

Scarica

Note

  • Ogni modifica richiede l'amministratore.
  • L'interfaccia grafica è in inglese.
