Channel dedicated to traffic from the official Python mailing lists, similar to what we do now with the Reddit channel that tracks r/python posts. The benefit of this is to enable people on the server to feel like they're able to keep up with what the broader Python community. Sure, anyone can subscribe to the lists themselves, but I feel they're not widely known, especially for newbies (I didn't know about them until a year or so ago, and I've been doing Python for 3 years). Additionally, many people either don't have access to email, their email system sucks, they never check it, or they have too much of it.

Long story short: enabling participating by putting core Python community conversations in front of our 5500+ users.

There could be one channel with everyone, or a section with several channels.
If there's a single channel, we could track:

  • comp.lang.python.announce
  • python-ideas

For multiple channels, we could have 3 or 4 channels:

  • comp.lang.python
  • comp.lang.python.announce and python-checkins
  • python-dev and python-ideas
  • Possibly python-help and tutor

The official mailing lists can be found here: https://www.python.org/community/lists/
