What feature are you proposing?

When a user sends multiple messages, they get muted automatically with the python discord bot, and a message is sent, confirming that this user is muted. The feature that I am suggesting is deleting the message after a minute or so.

What is your justification for the proposed feature?

Topical channels that aren’t necessarily used very often may have periods of empty messages, and when a mute message is shown it makes the channel look untidy and messy.

The moderators sometimes need this automute message to easily grab the appropriate user ID for unmuting.

We are fine with the message deleting itself after 10 minutes, which is the default duration of an automute.

This issue might work well in tandem with #2247 if both issues are approved by a core dev.

It's unrelated to filters as far as I can tell, since the message is sent out of the infractions cog. So the implementation would be adding a check there whether the actor is a bot.

I'm wondering whether we're gonna end up disliking not having the message after a while, but I don't mind trialing it 👍

Personally I'm not really a fan of deleting bot responses after a timeout, it's confusing to look back over. The response is only a single line long so I don't think it's harmful.

I suggest automatically deleting the timeout message if the user is banned within some window of time (maybe 10 minutes?) from when it was sent. Currently #internals-and-peps in particular tends to get filled up with messages about self botted accounts being muted after spamming across multiple channels. Mods then wind up banning the accounts, but the mute messages stick around, taking up space in the channel. Once the user has been banned, there's no longer anyone who should need to read the embed telling them that they were muted.
