The action stopped working for an old Quarto project of mine

Could you please advise on how to fix the issue? I am really frustrated with the fact that my website deployment breaks often without any change from my side.

Was private repo working before with the action ? Or did you make the repo private since ?

For private repo, you may need to insure the git inside the workflow can access your private repo.

Can you confirm your specific setup ?

Are you trying to publish using quarto publish to a private github repo ?

Yes, it was.

My GitHub action matches the one in the Quarto docs:

You are saying it was working for year

• with your private project ?
• or with your previously public project and now private ?

Also possibly quarto publish gh-pages locally won't work for you in a private project 🤔

I encountered the same error in a public project. Testing quarto publish gh-pages locally worked.

This project was always private. Never public.

Same problem, with a public project: https://github.com/milanmlft/talks/actions/runs/19644099102/job/56254927375#step:7:133. Was definitely working before.

I thought it was because I was missing

permissions:
  contents: write

but adding that didn't resolve it.

The problem is due to new v6 version of https://github.com/actions/checkout/releases/tag/v6.0.0

They changed the way credentials are persisted in a way that break our usage using git worktrees
See this comment: actions/checkout#2286 (comment)

We'll come up with a workaround as others did (like SUSE/BCI-dockerfile-generator@6c99dcf and zhangyoufu/lwn@df26597)

In the meantime, you can use revert to using v5 or use another method than quarto publish inside CI to publish to gh-pages

Action has been updated to v2.2.0 which has support for v6 of the checkout action.

We have a test now that should help detect.
