texwatch is a live-reloading TeX editor with a browser-based PDF viewer. One command gives you a split-pane writing environment at localhost:8765 with instant feedback.

Features

  • Browser-based editor + PDF viewer — CodeMirror 6 editor with LaTeX syntax highlighting alongside a PDF.js viewer, all served locally. Save a file and the PDF reloads automatically.
  • SyncTeX bidirectional navigation — Double-click a source line to jump to the corresponding PDF position. Click the PDF to jump back to source.
  • Error and warning parsing with source context — Compile errors appear inline with surrounding source lines and clickable locations. Full log viewer available.
  • Document structure parsing — Section/subsection tree, \input/\include hierarchy, TODO/FIXME collection, and word count (via texcount).
  • Multi-project support — texwatch serve --recursive discovers all projects under a directory and serves a dashboard with per-project routes.
  • MCP server for Claude Code — Exposes document state (status, errors, structure, navigation, compilation, screenshots) as MCP tools for AI-assisted writing workflows.
  • CLI commands — status, goto, compile, capture, config, files, scan, and more. Most accept --json for scripting.

Install

pip install texwatch # core
pip install texwatch[capture] # + PDF screenshot support
