Utility-Arguments is a Common Lisp (CL) software that handles command line arguments. It is similar in nature to Command-Line-Arguments but does a little bit more.

I'd tried a few other command line processing utilities before I decided to write my own. It's been a while and I don't recall all the details so I can not give a good comparison. Instead I can give you an idea on what I focused on.

Utility-Arguments tries to be very robust and liberal in parsing command line arguments. It is compatible to the syntax as described in the POSIX Utility Conventions and the GNU Argument Syntax Conventions, i.e. it should parse whatever getopt_long(3) parses. It is not fussy about spaces in option specifications, e.g. "--foo = bar" or "-f bar" does not confuse it; neither it is fussy about the equal sign in long option specifications, so it would happily accept "--foo bar" as well. It also doesn't care if you mix options and operands, i.e. options are not required to appear before operands.

Utility-Arguments doesn't try to produce a printed help for your options and usages. This is a feature, because I find it hard to produce a style which pleases all eyes. However, it may be added later in a way that it can be loaded optionally.

Utility-Arguments has a real notion of a usage, i.e. you define usages and they are distinct functions in your program. Therefore it is Utility-Arguments responsibility to untangle the options and operands on the command line, make sense of it, and apply them to a usage.

Utility-Arguments supports options with optional arguments. It supports options that take as argument a sequence, which also can be optional.
