It's needed because the UI is created with React and needs a browser engine to be rendered. I decided to do so for various reasons, and currently that's the situation. The source code is right here, if you you're willing to implement another UI, go ahead. Alternatively, you can use the command line, which is also available in Windhawk 2.0. Note that Windhawk 1.7.3 came with Electron, which just brought its own Chromium version instead of using the one that the vast majority of the users already have installed on their systems. Of course, if you prefer having it the old way, you can also keep using Windhawk 1.7.3. Regarding the update that broke it, you can create a new issue about it with more details. |

Thanks for the response but the command line is temporary as you posted so it wouldn't be worth using it. I would have stayed with v173 but today's Microsoft Win11 update broke it. There was no choice but to use the alpha. Again thanks for the program but I would really not prefer to have all this edge stuff on here. I've tried to avoid that as much as possible. |

You can often run commands from a program shortcut. You add it the end of the shortcut. I don't know what command prompt to use assuming it's in a command window. |
Turns out i'm in an even crazier position, because i'm on windows 10, and i use firefox 115 esr (I call it internet explorer) as my main browser, but, i always delete "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft", as Microsoft contains not just edge, but also webview2 and everything around edge, and yeah, i absolutely HATE edge so much, and for the same reasons above, it runs edgeupdate.exe in the background, and edge is littered with telemetry everywhere! It's even worse than even google chrome for me, much, much, worse. I downloaded the windhawk 2 alpha 2 for the command line, because sometime in an update in 2025, or due to the registry not being usable, the registry containing mod settings became unusable and was not filled anymore, as i used that to automate windhawk with .bat scripts i made, so when i saw that it had command line in windhawk 2, i installed alpha 2, and then, i saw this error: "[Window Title] [Content] Make sure it is installed or download it from https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2 You may have it installed on another user account, but it is not available for this one. [OK]" Yeah, it's telling me to install webview and edge again because windhawk depends on it, and that's a shame really, since in my opinion, electron could've been used and i would've not had that same problem at all, since electron is seperate from webview2, which i have gutted on my windows 10 computer and is still running perfectly without it. I will still not install edge and webview2 again on windows 10 due to the reasons i mentioned above, and i will instead switch to command line fully soon. As for the environment variable "WINDHAWK_USE_VSCODIUM_UI=1", i have absolutely no idea how to toggle it or run it, as right now, i would use the old ui for the time being, but i plan on fully switching to command line soon, as that vscodium ui will be deprecated soon, but i would love for an easy way to use windhawk with the environment variable "WINDHAWK_USE_VSCODIUM_UI=1", as i tried using a shortcut like: ""C:\Program Files\Windhawk\windhawk.exe" WINDHAWK_USE_VSCODIUM_UI=1", I also tried setting it in windhawk.ini and nothing happened: " |

I don't understand all this hate towards Microsoft. If you hate them so much, perhaps you shouldn't be using Windows. Also, getting rid of WebView2 is not likely a good idea. Many applications use it nowadays, not just Windhawk, and this way, you are limiting yourself from using any of those apps. You can have WebView2 without having the Edge browser. Also, the space and memory concerns aren't real. Before WebView2, everyone was making HTML-based UIs, and shipping them with Electron. And Electron is pretty much the same thing, it spawns multiple processes just like WebView2 (they're both Chromium, after all), and takes the same disk space. However, with Electron, every app ships its own separate copy, with a fixed Chromium version, while WebView2 is shared by all apps, and is constantly updating. So, migrating to WebView2 is a natural path for app developers (and if you don't like updates, well, browsers ARE SUPPOSED to be updated, there's always new vulnerabilities being found).
Bro, this is an environment variable. You're not supposed to put it in the shortcut, nor in Windhawk.ini. if you don't know how to set environment variables, then perhaps you shouldn't even be using something like Windhawk. To set an environment variable you must open Windows Settings and go into System -> Advanced Settings -> Environment variables tab. Or, this command might take you directly there. |

What's even more annoying for me when it comes to Microsoft and their edge spyware is that I'm on Windows 11 Iot Enterprise LTSC which is supposed to include security patches only and no feature updates. IOW a stable platform that doesn't break things but with almost every update something else is broken or disrupted. I'm quite satisfied with windhawk 1.7.3 but don't know how long we'll be able to stay on it. |

Same, except i'm on windows 10 ESU, and i plan to move to windows 10 iot ltsc 2021 once the ESU ends, and i delibrately deleted the entire edge directory on my windows 10 installation just because i HATE edge so much! What's even MORE interesting, i edited regedit.exe using resource hacker to change the icon, but what i didn;t realize at the time, it SOMEHOW, made regedit 32bit instead of 64 bit! I didn't see SYSWOW6432Node in regedit because modifying regedit somehow makes it 32 bit, so i reverted it, and sure enough, i saw it. I checked the Windhawk registry, and lord and behold, there it was the whole time, the windhawk mod settings! Because of this, i will switch back to 1.7.3 soon, and since 1.7.3 still works, i think i will stay there, unless windhawk 2.0 moves away from webview2, which is tied to edge, which i dispise. |

This phenomenon was caused by WOW64 redirection. Resource Hacker is a 32 bit app, and it cannot see the System32 folder. When you try to open regedit.exe, it gets redirected to the SysWOW64 folder, and you end up opening the 32 bit regedit. If you want to open the real 64 bit regedit, you have to copy regedit.exe from System32 to a different folder, and open it from there. |

Actually I'm on dual boot with Windows 10 Iot and Windows 11 Iot. One is supported until 2032 and the other 2034. Windows 10 is so much better, it's faster and not as sluggish. I don't update both with Microsoft every month, too much work, it's split every other month between the two so whichever one I update I'll tend to use more frequently. I've found it's always a good idea to have dual boots so if one OS suddenly goes bad or gets corrupted you got something else to boot into quickly. May even consider installing Linux as well. Agree completely with 1.7.3, it still works fine and makes Windows 11 actually usable. Between this, open shell and explorerpatcher it's like I never left Windows 98SE. |

Today I installed 2.0 alpha 1 because after July's Windows 11 update KB5101650 Windhawk v173 broke. While 2.0 alpha 1 does restore Windhawk I noticed it is requiring webview, which runs under searchhost. This is forcing me to keep the EdgeCore and EdgeWebView folders, which together take up over 1.5gbs while constantly running several webview instances in Task Manager.
What changed in the program that this is now needed? I'm only using 3 tweaks but the total program usage is over 2.5gbs of space including edge components, a junk browser I don't even use. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for the program but it seems a bit bloated considering what it's actually used for.
