This allows you to write TUIs that more reasonably can do selection / highlighting / shades over background type things (i.e. 35% alpha yellow bg) and allows the bg to filter through without having to calc the bg color and interpolate.
The obvious downside is that it adds a byte to each cell, but 10k lines * 200 chars wide = 8MB instead of 6MB. That's an immaterial amount on 99%+ of hardware these days.

Wezterm describes an extension to SGR that allows an Alpha channel.
