Agent install on TrueNAS does not work

Describe the bug
I read that the newer versions now support TrueNAS by installing on a writable location and using init scripts to get around the immutable aspects (which is great!).
However, when running the install script, it tries to write to /usr/local/bin and fails.

To Reproduce
Simply run the Linux install command as usual

Expected behavior
The script should detect that it's a TrueNAS environment and change install paths, use Init/Shutdown scripts, etc...

Environment:

• Pulse Version: v4.36.0
• Installation Type: ProxmoxVE LXC

Added TrueNAS SCALE support in commit d2ec124.

The installer now:

1. Detects TrueNAS SCALE via /etc/truenas-version and other markers
2. Installs to /data/pulse-agent instead of /usr/local/bin (which is read-only on TrueNAS)
3. Creates an Init/Shutdown task to restore the systemd service after TrueNAS updates

This fix will be in the next release. In the meantime, you can download the updated installer directly from main and run it:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/rcourtman/Pulse/main/scripts/install.sh | \
  sudo bash -s -- --url http://<pulse-ip>:7655 --token <token>

The installer should now detect TrueNAS and use the correct paths. Would appreciate confirmation that this works on your system.

Pushed a fix (bc501df) that should improve TrueNAS detection.

The installer now:

1. Checks if the hostname contains "truenas"
2. Tests if /usr/local/bin is actually writable - if not and /data exists, uses TrueNAS installation paths

You can test with the updated script from main:

Wait I "huzzah-ed" too soon. It never shows up in Pulse and there's no activity from the log.

Pushed a potential fix (86d303b) for the permission denied issue.

The problem is that TrueNAS SCALE may have /data mounted with exec=off (noexec), which prevents binaries from executing directly. The updated installer now:

1. Stores the binary in /data/pulse-agent/ for persistence across upgrades
2. Copies it to /usr/local/bin (tmpfs, allows exec) for runtime execution
3. Updates the bootstrap script to copy on each boot

You can test with the updated installer from main:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/rcourtman/Pulse/main/scripts/install.sh | \
  sudo bash -s -- --url http://<pulse-ip>:7655 --token <token>

Let me know if this resolves the permission denied errors.

The problem is that TrueNAS SCALE 24.04+ has a read-only /usr/local/bin. The installer was assuming it was a writable tmpfs location, but that's not true on newer TrueNAS versions.

The updated installer now:

1. First tests if the binary can execute directly from /data (no copy needed if /data allows execution)
2. If not, tries /usr/local/bin, then /root/bin, then /var/tmp - using the first location that's both writable and allows execution

You can test with:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/rcourtman/Pulse/main/scripts/install.sh | \
  sudo bash -s -- --url http://<pulse-ip>:7655 --token <token>

Would appreciate confirmation on whether this works.

we're getting there. It's not checking in.

The agent is running but not checking in - could be a connectivity or DNS issue.

Can you share the output of:

# Check logs
tail -50 /data/pulse-agent/logs/pulse-agent.log

# Test connectivity
curl -v http://10.0.0.230:7655/api/health

The logs should show what's happening when the agent tries to connect.
