Scanning Empty QR code for positioning/orientation

Hello, Is it possible to scan an empty QR code to be used for orientation and positioning

Just something like this where the corners can represent a point, I've been trying and so far the only thing that triggers the barcode scanner is QR codes with information. Does anyone have any direction they could point me in if I was to implement such a thing - does this fall into machine learning? Or even if I want to implement a new type of barcode, what should I look into?
