[Backend] FastAPI + SQLModel/SQLAlchemy + PostgreSQL + OpenTelemetry

Hi everyone 👋

I’ve been learning FastAPI and decided to build a backend project to consolidate both backend and DevOps best practices in a single, practical example.

This project is a Python API built with FastAPI, using SQLModel/SQLAlchemy and PostgreSQL. It also includes:

• Alembic for database migrations
• OpenTelemetry for observability (integrated with Prometheus, Jaeger, OpenSearch, and Grafana)
• Docker with multiple image strategies (standard, multistage, distroless, and Chainguard)
• GitHub Actions for CI automation
• Code quality tooling such as mypy, flake8, isort, and pre-commit

The goal is to provide a clean, practical reference for building, testing, and operating a modern FastAPI service with real-world engineering practices.

Note: The backend is based on the excellent project borys25ol/fastapi-realworld-backend, but adapted with a simpler project structure and a stronger focus on DevOps practices.

Next steps:

• Add a Helm chart example
• Expand the test suite with Pytest
• Integrate Trivy for security scanning
• And more improvements along the way 🚀
