Narrative Structure

In the story mode you can choose to play as Ryo Sakazaki or as Robert Garcia. They are both friends and rivals at the same time. Ryo goes into the dangerous south town to find his kidnapped sister, Robert goes with him. That happens in 1980 when Ryo and Robert are students of Kyokugen Karate Dojo. Ryo's father is the creator of the Kyokugen karate and Robert is the black sheep of a millonaire family.

When you have chosen Ryo or Robert to go find Yuri (Ryo's sister), you first fight is against Todoh. He is a student of Kyokugen Karate Dojo like Ryo, but they don't get along well so Ryo begin his search of his sister with Todo as he suspects of him having something to do with his kidnapped sister. When he is defeated, Ryo fights versus Jack, a high rank of Mr. Big. After that, Ryo goes to China town to see if Lee(Master on martial arts and medicine) knows something about Yuri. Then, he goes to the restaurant L'amor. There, he finds King, a women that wants to cover her gender to avoid any type of discrimination and be able to become a member of Mr. Big's mafia. She tells him that his sister is in the military establishment. As Ryo heads to the military zone, he's surprised by mickey an ex-boxer in search of opponents to vent his wrath and frustation. Mickey takes him to the port and Ryo fights with John, known as killer machine, a strong guy who was captain at the U.S.A. marine forces.

After finishing him, John tells him where Mr. Big is and finally, it seems he will get back his sister but, he was wrong... A strong opponent was waiting him in the karate gym. His aspect and movility were so similar as Ryo. After defeating him, his sister appeared and told Ryo to stop because his opponent was...
We can interpretate that his opponent was his father.

Analysis of each level

We have divided this headland into indiviual analysis of each story mode stageTodoh's Stage, Jack's Stage, Lee's Stage, King's stage, Mickey's Stage, John's Stage, Mr. Big's Stage, Mr. Karate's Stage: and a final Conclusion to breakdown the difficulty curve.

There are 8 levels in the videogame. To mesure the difficulty of each, we did a table with some factors that we considered, those were:

  • Combo (x/10)
  • Speed (x/10)
  • Damage (x/10)
  • Aero Movements (x/10)
  • Ground Movements (x/10)
  • Times I died
  • Psicological consequences
  • Learning Curve

TODOH

The first level is to test how it's the videogame. If it's your first time you could lose a few battles, but if you know the basic controls it won't be difficult. You can defeat this enemy with one movement, jump + kick.
Puntuation:

  • Combo (3)
  • Speed (2)
  • Damage (5)
  • Aero Movements (2)
  • Ground Movements (3)
  • Times I died (0)

No psicological consequences and you don't really learn so many things.

JACK

The second level it's so difficult comparing it with the first one. Jack has a strong damage and fast atacks. You improve a lot in this level and the frustration could start increasing.
Puntuation:

  • Combo (5)
  • Speed (6)
  • Damage (8)
  • Aero Movements (6)
  • Ground Movements (7)
  • Times I died (7)
  • Frustration

LEE

The third level it's easy if you move faster than your opponent. He has a low damage so it won't suppose an extra difficulty. In our opinion, this level makes you be prepared for the next one.
Puntuation:

  • Combo (8)
  • Speed (8)
  • Damage (4)
  • Aero Movements (5)
  • Ground Movements (7)
  • Times I died (1)

KING

The fourth level it's so complicated, because your rival is much faster than the previous one and she has alot of damage. Here i got frustrated, much more than the second level. Her combos were the most difficult for now.
Puntuation:

  • Combo (8)
  • Speed (10)
  • Damage (4)
  • Aero Movements (5)
  • Ground Movements (7)
  • Times I died (1)
  • Frustration
  • Learn curve increasing

MICKEY

The fifth level it's the easier one. Why? It's probably because the frustation in the level four was high and the player needs to feel he's good. The enemy doesn't jump and his combos are bad. The difficulty here was low.
Puntuation:

  • Combo (4)
  • Speed (1)
  • Damage (6)
  • Aero Movements (0)
  • Ground Movements (6)
  • Times I died (0)

JOHN

The sixth level stand out by his aero movement. It's not as complicated as it seems because the enemy repeats alot his movements. He has alot of damage and combos. It's hard to defeat him if you don't know how to use ranged habilities.
Puntuation:

  • Combo (7)
  • Speed (6)
  • Damage (8)
  • Aero Movements (7)
  • Ground Movements (4)
  • Times I died (0)

MR. BIG

The seventh level is the most difficult one. He seems the final boss, but he isn't. Even so, he has an amazing damage and fast movements. It's complicated to hurt him by air and even if you block his atacks he will hurt you alot. It seems Mr. Big is programmed to dodge and atack with a low time reaction.

  • Combo (6)
  • Speed (8)
  • Damage (10)
  • Aero Movements (3)
  • Ground Movements (9)
  • Times I died (23)
  • Frustration
  • Learn curve increasing a lot

Mr. Karate

The last level isn't as difficult as the previous one. The "final boss" was Mr. Big and this one is just for make the plot much more interesting. He has the same habilities than Ryo.

  • Combo (7)
  • Speed (5)
  • Damage (9)
  • Aero Movements (8)
  • Ground Movements (8)
  • Times I died (5)

CONCLUSION

Let's calculate the difficulty with a graphic. To mix all the data together and make it having sense we will make a table and in the first column we will put all the puntuation added. In the second column we will put the frustration that the level produced to the player.

If we make a graphic we will see this.

In my opinion, I think the graphic makes sense because it shows exactly where I had difficulties considering the skill of the opponent and the frustration i had.

Power Ups

On your story mode path you find bonus levels that can give you power ups.

Power Ups

You can choose one of these options. Each option will boost you with a different power up.

First of all we have the bottle cut. You have to stop the movement of the bar when is closer to "MAX".

Bottle Cut

If you cut the four bottles, you will get extra Spirit (the energy you use to do habilities).

Then, the second option is about pressing a lot of times the button "A".

break ice

If you break all the ice, your Strenght will be increased.

Finally, the third option is about making the hability "Haoh Shokoh Ken" 6 times.

hability

If you can do the hability 6 times, you will get the exclusive hability "Super Death Blow".

Gameplay

Now, we treated what we think to be the most important terms when talking about gameplay. First, analyzing the basic controls and the special attacks, which is a key point to stablish the gameplay function: Basic Moves, Habilites.
And the rules that must be definied to correctly proceed with a succesful gameplay experience: Rules

Basic Moves

The controls of the machine are:

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • JOYSTICK (2D movement)
    • UP
    • DOWN
    • RIGHT
    • LEFT There are basic movements that work for all the characters,
  • A -> Weak Punch
  • B -> Weak Kick
  • A + C -> Strong Punch
  • B + C -> Strong Kick
  • C + "Close" -> Throw
  • C -> Weak Punch if the A was the last atack
  • C -> Weak Kick if the B whas de last atack
  • C + Air -> WallJump, if close to Wall and Character can Walljump. (It doesn't work for all characters)
  • D -> Taunt (reduce the spirit of the rival)
  • Hold A or B -> Restores the Spirit
  • Right + Right -> Dash Forward
  • Left + Left -> Retreat

Habilities

Also there are special movements for each character that makes extra damage but consume Spirit(energy to do special atacks). We have analyzed all the special attacks or so called habilites for each character: Ryo, Robert, Todoh, Jack, Lee, King, Mickey, John, Mr. Big, Mr. Karate

Rules

There are 6 rules that establish Art of Fighting. These are: Health, Spirit, Win System, Time, Character & Habilities

Health

The players starts with the same health than it's opponent, 100%. If the bar goes down to 0%, that player loses. If a player do a "KO" without losing health, he will achieve a "Perfect Round"

Spirit

Tha player starts with the same spirit each round. You can use it to do special habilities that make extra damage to your opponent. Each hability consumes a specific % of spirit. If your spirit is lower that the recquired, the player will do the animation of the hability but it will vanish after it's thrown. To regenerate it, you can wait and overtime it will increase or you can hold "A" or "B" without getting interrupted by the attacks of your enemy. Being the last one the fastest way to recharge your spirit. If the enemy presses "D" (Taunt), your spirit will decrease radically.

Win System

It's based on a best of 3 rounds. The first who reaches 2 "KO" will win the battle.

Time

When the combat starts, you have 60 seconds to take down your opponent, if no one gets to "KO" it's rival in 60 seconds, the player who has the biggest amount of health will be the winner of the round.

Character

The player can choose between 8 characters. The enemy can choose the same character as you. In Story Mode you only get to play as Ryo or Robert, plus if you get to beat Mr.Big or Mr.Karate in the story mode they will be unlocked for you to play as themin versus mode.

Habilities

Each character has different special habilities which consume a different Spirit amount. You just can make a single hability at the same time. To realize the habilities you have to use your joystick and buttons in the correct order. Some habilities recquire spirit, if you don't have enough spirit, you will make the animation but won't be able to accomplish the hability.

Events

If we talk about the events that get triggered through the gameplay experience we thought appropiated to divide them into:Events that happen in combat & Events that happen in the bonus map.

Events that happen in a combat

  • When you start a combat in the story mode the player and the enemy establish a dialogue, after a couple of seconds the fight will begin. We will put all this in one event, the main event that get executed when you enter to a combat.
  • When the cinematic scene is over, the combat is ready to start. It appears a text saying "ROUND 1" and all the UI is loaded. Then, it appears a text saying "Fight". The combat has started.
  • When the combat is started, another event is executed. The timer starts (60s) and the movement and habilities are abled.
  • There are 4 events that only get executed with a condition.
    • When the 2 characters are close to each to other, the camera zooms at them, and when they move away, the camera do a zoom out.
    • When a character does damage to the opponent, the health bar decreases.
    • When a character does a special hability his spirit bar decreases.
    • When someone gets a KO, the winPoints of the winner get increased by 1 and if it's his second KO, he wins the match.
  • When the combat finishes with the victory of the player, the story points get increased.
  • If nobody has 2 winPoints after 3 rounds, the combat will be repeated.

Events that happen in the bonus map

First of all the game will open a menu to choose the type of bonus you want and how you can get it.

  • Ice Pillar Smash -> First of all the game will show you what you have to do. Then, you will have to press the maximum times the "A" button. With this action, the bar will increase. If you stop pressing "A", the bar will decrease. Meanwhile a timer is counting. The game will stop when the 9 seconds counter reaches 0. If you don't get the maximum puntuation, the extra strength won't be given to you. Then, the bonus game will give you extra storyPoints depending of the bar progress.
  • Bottle Cut -> Bottle Cut has de same events than Ice Pillar Smash, but the bar is controled by time. You have to stop the bar when its at the maximum position. If you do it, the bonus game will give you storyPoints and extra Spirit.
  • Kao-Ken -> This bonus game is to learn a new hability, a strong one. When the event begins, it starts a timer, the movement and a counter. You have to repeat the controls shown on the screen 5 times before the timer reaches 0, then, if you do it, you will have this extra hability and as the other bonuses, storyPoints.

General Story Mode Events

The events that happen during the game are repetitive. To make it easy to understand, we did an explanation of the events that are fired in the combat and in the bonus game.
The game starts with the fight of The main character versus Todoh. The combat event is fired. After that, the character needs to move to another stage. The events are:

  • When the combat finishes, a cinematic starts, showing the principal character driving in the street saying something about finding Yuri, the sister of Ryo.
  • A new screen appears showing the map of the city. At the same time, the site you are going to go flickers. Now, we know all the process of a confrontation, combat and travel. This routine happens 8 times (8 enemies).
During the game there are some bonus games. The events that execute the bonus map is explained a few lines before. These events are fired between:
  • 2-3 Level
  • 4-5 Level
  • 6-7 Level
