Feature Request - keep zoom rates for the current session.

Hi again.
Could an option be added to keep the zoom rate per picture for the current session?

Sometimes I shoot several photos of the same object and then zoom to 100% to determine which is the sharpest or best looking one.
when I switch to the next photo and then back, the Zoom resets. For me it'd be better if Fly would keep the zoom of the previous and next photos as long as Fly is viewing the current selection/folder of photos so I can quickly delete the photos that don't fit my expectations without having to zoom back in.

Actually Fly used to be like that earlier. I think until 2.5.4 or 2.5.3. Initially, I also preferred that way.
But when I was redoing the entire maths to adjust for Windows Scale % awareness and Nvidia GPU issues, there were discussion on those threads to remove this feature by others and I did that way.(As the new maths for 1:1 and zoom display % and all made this feature more difficult especially when switching between photos of varyiing resolutions).
Earlier maths always scaled the photo first to display area and then pan and zoom operations were done on that scaled values. So keeping pan and zoom values between photos of different size was more easy.

Need to think how this can be done which feels intuitive to the user.. like panning a 4000pixel image to the extreme left and then switching to a lower pixel value image.

I think the old version would attempt to apply the current pan and zoom settings to the next photo you viewed, regardless of the resolution, orientation or ratio. In comparison, Picasa initially displays all images to fit, but then remembers any subsequent custom pan/zoom operations for each individual image, until the app is closed. This allows quick switching between images with the specific pan and zoom maintained for each photo. This approach is particularly useful if you are trying to review photos of the same subject but with different compositions.

So to implement, this would likely need an array held in memory of the last pan and zoom for each image, which is checked and applied prior to display. If an image doesn’t have an entry, then the default fit (from Settings) is used.

I am a new user and the keep zoom per session was a feature I immediately found missing. I often go through folders that feature similar, often small size pics and zooming in every single time I navigate to the next one feels annoying.

I can see how it would be useful in that scenario. However, it would only really work with folders of images of identical size. With a folder of images of mixed resolution, ratio, or orientation, it would likely give undesirable results.

I guess the ideal would be to have both methods available as a user selectable option. So the memory array would hold the last pan and zoom for each image, which is checked and applied prior to display. If an image doesn’t have an entry, then depending on the user preference, either the default new image fit is used, or the pan/zoom settings from the previous image are used.

Easy to comment on, but I suspect that would be a lot of coding work.

If this feature created issues for some users, it might make sense to implement it as an
option to turn on in the settings so those with issues can still let it turned off.

What I said was Fly used to be like this.. It preserved Pan and Zoom (as a factor of fitted width and height) earlier. But that feature was lost during reimplementation of Pan and Zoom mathematics as many users preferred to reset zoom when going to next photo. In the new maths, preserving Pan and Zoom might be a little more difficult to do intuitively. (Earlier every photo's base size was considered as zoomed to fill frame first and then Pan and zoom was computed as a factor on top of it. So the preserved zoom and pan felt natural when switching between various sizes).

Seems to be working well. Although I don't think it is a feature I would personally use very frequently.

Ah I see. On Picasa, when you zoomed a picture in, the zoom was retained -only- for that picture, up until the point you closed Picasa and opened it again. It was useful for when you wanted to go back and forth between images without having to zoom again and again a particular image.

Fly's toggle instead makes the zoom apply to all pictures simultaneously on my end, if I zoom a picture to 300%, then the next one will be zoomed in 300%, and all the ones before it too. A global zoom, rather than the app keeping zoom rate per picture per session.

If this is intended behavior then it is working as intended, it is unlike Picasa; but probably useful for oxOxIxOxo

I think I understood it wrong and you are right. Most probably @oxOxIxOxo was asking for the Picasa type behaviour. @oxOxIxOxo , Can you please comment?
