Safety

Thresholds (HardwareBridge::check_safety)

Condition Status
gpu_temp_c > 85 Critical
power_w > 350 Critical
Elevated temp/power approaching limits Warn
Non-finite / unknown-power edge cases Critical (see unit tests)
Normal range Ok

Returns (SafetyStatus, is_simulated).

Emergency brake

  • apply_emergency_brake(pct) — e.g. main loop uses 0.5 (50% power limit) via nvidia-smi -pl
  • release_emergency_brake() — restore default power limit
  • Apply/release run on blocking tokio tasks so the async loop is not stalled

Hysteresis (main loop)

  • Safety checked every 10 steps
  • After brake: require 3 consecutive real Ok readings before release
  • Simulated telemetry: hold brake (do not release on fake Ok)
  • Warn after release can re-trigger brake

Process safety

  • Lockfile /tmp/thalamic_relay.lock with PID
  • Stale lock reclaimed only if recorded PID is dead
  • Unreadable lock → refuse to start (fail closed)
  • Lock acquired before UDP/metrics bind
