Troubleshooting
Start with the log (Settings → General → Log → Open) and the vault's status in Settings → Vaults.
- The vault must be quiet for its quiet period (default 60 minutes) after the last file change. Obsidian saves as you type, so the timer restarts while you edit.
- Today must be one of the vault's reminder days.
- A dismissed reminder comes back at the daily reminder time, not right away.
- Skipped vaults stay silent until the vault changes again.
- Not watched (checkbox off) vaults are never checked.
- Changes only under ignored paths (e.g.
.obsidian/workspace.json) never count.
From Terminal, the same status the app sees:
/Applications/ObsidianVaultGitWatcher.app/Contents/MacOS/ObsidianVaultGitWatcher --statusA push failed (no network, authentication, the remote moved ahead) or you committed without pushing. Use Push N commits in the vault's menu; if it fails, the alert shows git's error. Pull and resolve in Terminal if the remote moved ahead (the app never pulls or merges).
The vault's folder must be the top folder of a git repository with at least one commit. Use Change… in the vault's settings if it moved.
Releases are self-signed with a stable identity, so permissions survive updates (not notarized, so first launch still needs Open Anyway). See Installation.
Settings → General → Launch at login must be on. Check the agent:
launchctl print gui/$(id -u)/com.roypadina.obsidian-vault-git-watcher | grep -E 'state|pid'Show the icon: only when a vault needs attention hides it while every vault is fine. Open the app again (Finder or Spotlight) to get to Settings. If the menu bar is full, a menu bar manager may be hiding it.
Open an issue with the macOS version, the app version and the relevant log lines (remove anything private).
