+1 on this. I prepared a Dockerfile and some shell scripts which upload the gems to s3 and create the index. https://github.com/tmaier/docker-s3-gemserver

The only thing missing for the perfect solution is native s3 source support in Bundler. As far as I know rubygems supports already s3. #856

What is requried from solution architecture perspective to get Bundler working with S3? Would it simply utilize rubygems' S3 capability?

Also +1 for this, it would allow much finer grained access controls, current private repo options are a bit limited and being able to provide access via IAM permissions would be wonderful 👍

Rubygems 3.0 supports now S3 sources. (see History.txt)

What is missing for Bundler to support S3 as well?

I wrote a plugin to add s3 support to bundler: https://github.com/eki/bundler-source-aws-s3

It has a dependency on the aws cli, which may not be ideal for some folks, but it works for me.

Is there an update to this? From tmaier I see that rubygems has support. Can bundler use that? If not is there some blocker?

Thought I would note it is possible to use http auth from Bundler to load gems from S3. Create a CloudFront distribution, secure with basic auth if desired using Lambda. Plenty to find on Google but I posted some instructions on the wiki for this gem which I created to provide rake tasks for S3 private gem hosting. See: s3_gem_host and s3_gem_host Wiki
