Plinth 1.14.0

Plinth 1.14.0 adds a mallet key for one-key keypads, foot pedals and Stream Deck, lets the hour and the season temper each knock, and starts the fish in ink, with a new app icon to match.

New

• Mallet key. In Settings → Knocking → While You Work, record a key on a one-key keypad, a foot pedal or a Stream Deck button as the mallet. Pressing it in any app knocks the fish by hand, with no permission needed. An F-key can be the mallet alone; any other key needs two modifiers, one of them ⌘ or ⌃, so shortcuts such as ⌘C and ⌃C keep working.
• The hour and the season. Each knock, and the hall it rings in, shifts slightly with the time of day and the time of year: clearer at the 4 a.m. morning board (早板) and in winter, warmer late at night and in summer. The shift is gradual: no knock sounds unlike the one before.
• New app icon. The ink fish on rice paper, matching the disk image and Settings → Why a Fish.

Improved

• The fish starts in ink. New installs, and anyone who has never chosen a skin, now get the Ink Fish. A skin you chose, the Wooden Fish included, stays as it is. Every skin is still under Skin in the fish's menu.
• Across displays. The knock now comes from where the fish sits among all your displays, with the main display in front of you: a fish on a display to the right sounds from the right. On headphones you can hear where.
• Calls. The three knocks of plinth://call, and of a stick of incense burning out (开静), now each ring in full. Once the first knock has sounded, pressing any key or clicking anywhere ends the call, as a knock by hand already did.
• The scroll fish. In Settings → Why a Fish, the painted fish now always knocks in the Ink Fish's voice, and the fish on your desktop no longer swings its mallet behind the window.
• README. A new opening on why Plinth calls you with struck wood rather than banners and badges, and the app icon at the top.

Plinth 1.13.0

Plinth 1.13.0 brings a slower close to a round of 108 auto-knocks, fuller knocks for lighting incense and for the knock after long typing, and a painted fish in Settings you can knock.

New

• Closing the round. With Stop after 108 knocks on, the last three auto-knocks slow down, and the 108th rings out in full before the silence (煞板).
• The scroll fish knocks. In Settings → Why a Fish, click the painted fish on the scroll to knock it.

Improved

• Knock after long typing. Auto-knock now also keeps quiet before the knock and for a few breaths after it. The knock rings in full, so it stands apart. The setting is renamed from "Knock when it's time to pause".
• Lighting incense. The first knock rings in full, even right after another knock (止静).
• Heard, not seen. The knock now comes from straight ahead, not from where the hidden fish last sat.
• A few words. 「云在青天水在瓶」 now appears as the dialogue between Li Ao and Yaoshan, from the Zutang ji.

Plinth 1.12.0

Plinth 1.12.0 adds a knock to pause after long typing, a slower auto-knock pace to breathe with, and a way to keep the fish off the screen while you still hear it.

New

• Knock when it's time to pause. After half an hour of typing with no three-minute rest, the fish knocks once, after a short quiet, so you can stop and take three breaths. Knock as you type keeps quiet for them. Turn it on in Settings → Knocking → While You Work. It needs no permission, and nothing is counted or kept.
• With the breath. A new auto-knock pace, every 6 seconds, in the Pace menu. In Settings, the interval now goes up to 8 seconds.
• Heard, not seen. A new Placement that takes the fish off the screen and leaves its knock and the menu bar icon. The fish's sayings wait until it is seen again.

Improved

• Auto-knock and sleep. Auto-knock keeps going for an hour after the screens go to sleep, then rests until they wake, so the Mac can sleep. Before, a running auto-knock kept the Mac from sleeping.
• The fish's day now begins at 4 a.m., not midnight, so a knock late at night doesn't use up the next day's saying.

Plinth 1.11.0 adds a call: three knocks you can hear over a running auto-knock, for when a build, a test run, or a coding agent needs you.

New

• Call. open -g plinth://call calls you back with three knocks, the same three that end a stick of incense. Auto-knock and knock as you type pause for the call, and the knocks come after a short quiet, so you hear them over a running auto-knock. Knock the fish to end a call early. A call that arrives while another is sounding joins it, and knocks from plinth://knock or Shortcuts are skipped until it ends. Like other knocks not made by hand, a call is silent while another app is using a microphone.
• Coding agents. The README has hooks for Claude Code and Codex that call you when the agent asks for your permission.

Improved

Plinth 1.10.0

Plinth 1.10.0 makes the knock answer the moment you press, lets you hear a setting as you change it, and tidies the menu and Settings.

New

• Hear a setting as you change it. Letting go of the Volume or Space slider in Settings > Knocking knocks once. Choosing a skin, from the fish's menu or Settings > Skins, knocks once in its voice. When you change the Space, the knock waits until the new room is ready.
• Skin pictures in the menu. Each skin in the fish's Skin menu now shows a small picture of itself.
• Deep press. On a Force Touch trackpad, a deep press on the fish taps back harder.
• Reduce Motion. With Reduce Motion on, the mallet settles without bouncing and the fish no longer gives under it.

Improved

• Knocks on press. The mallet swings as soon as you press the fish, not when you let go. Press and drag to move the fish: a swing still in the air goes back up without a sound.
• The fish stays on screen. Let go of the fish with less than a third of it on screen and it slides back into view. If its display is disconnected, it moves to one that is still there.
• A tidier menu. The fish's menu is grouped by what each item does, with ⌘, for Settings… and ⌘Q for Quit Plinth. The middle pace is now Moderate · every 1 s, so it no longer shares a name with the Steady rhythm. A pace set in Settings that the menu doesn't list now appears there, checked.
• Settings. The Volume and Space sliders line up, with Meditation room and Great hall under the Space slider. The Every slider moves in proportion, so 0.4 to 0.8 seconds is as far as 2 to 4, in steps of 0.1 second. Turning on Knock on its own opens its options with an animation.

Fixed

• The first knock after a quiet no longer sounds a moment after the mallet lands.

Plinth 1.9.0 brings calmer Settings, a deeper Temple Fish, fuller rings on five skins, and a mallet that clears the crossbar on hanging skins.

• Calmer Settings. Settings > Knocking is now grouped into Sound, Auto-Knock, While You Work and The Fish. Auto-knock's options appear only when it is on, and the note under Rhythm describes only the rhythm you chose. Settings > Skins shows each skin cropped to its figure, with a link to how to make your own.
• For skin authors. skin.json accepts a new raise key: how high the mallet rests above its strike point, in degrees from 0 to 80 (25 by default). See the skin format.

Improved

• Temple Fish. Now the lowest of the wooden fishes, with a longer hollow ring and a softer knock, so it is easy to tell from the Ink Fish. Its mallet lands on the dome like the other fishes'.
• Fuller rings. Singing Bowl, Cloud Gong, Stone Chime, Bianzhong and Bamboo Block now ring all the way out instead of stopping short.
• Hanging skins. On Stone Chime, Cloud Gong, Bianzhong and Fish Board, the mallet now rests clear of the crossbar.
• Ripples on light desktops. The ripples after a knock now carry a faint shadow, so they stay visible on a light desktop.
• Seal. Its mallet now has a boxwood head of its own instead of the Abacus's rosewood.

• With skins of your own installed, choosing a skin no longer uses more memory each time, and no longer reads every one of your skins from disk again.

Plinth 1.8.0

Plinth 1.8.0 adds the Temple Fish skin and a knock that is made for each strike and rings in one hall.

New

• Temple Fish. A new skin: an old double-fish muyu in faded oxblood lacquer, worn through to the wood, with a cloth-wrapped mallet and its own low, rounded knock. Choose it from the Skin menu or in Settings > Skins. Plinth now comes with twenty-one skins.
• A knock for every strike. Plinth now makes each knock as the mallet falls, so no two are the same. On a Force Touch trackpad, a firmer click lands harder and a deep click hardest. A click away from the strike point sounds more of the shell and less of the hollow.
• One hall. Every knock now rings in the same room, sized by the Space slider in Settings > Knocking, so a quick run of knocks builds up and rings on together.
• Sound on headphones. On headphones, Plinth places the knock around you, left and right and up and down, from where the fish sits on your screen. Speakers keep the gentle pan.
• For skin authors. skin.json accepts the new temple voice. Settings > Skins lists all twenty-one knock voices. See the skin format.

Plinth 1.7.0

Plinth 1.7.0 adds eight skins, skins you can share as files, a refined incense stick, and a redesigned Why a Fish page.

New

• Eight new skins. An abacus, a cloud gong (云板), a blue-and-white porcelain fish, a bianzhong bell (编钟), a seal, a stone chime (石磬), a fish board (鱼板), and a mug, each with its own mallet and knock. Choose them from the Skin menu or in Settings > Skins. Plinth now comes with twenty skins.
• Shareable skins. A skin can now travel as a single .plinthskin file. To install one, double-click it in Finder, drop it on the fish, or choose it in Skin > Add Skins…. To share a skin of your own, right-click it in Settings > Skins and choose Export as .plinthskin….
• More skins to browse. Browse More Skins…, in the Skin menu and in Settings > Skins, opens the community skin gallery on GitHub.
• A refined incense stick. Light Incense now sets the stick in a small matte ash bowl beside the pedestal, which catches a little of the pedestal's light. The stick catches with a brief flame, its ember brightens when you knock, ash breaks off into the bowl, and the last smoke drifts away under the closing knocks.
• Why a Fish. The page in Settings is redesigned as an ink-wash hanging scroll, with the line from the Imperial Edition of Baizhang's Pure Rules set in vertical columns.
• Installer window. The disk image opens on a matching ink-wash window.
• For skin authors. skin.json can name the pedestal's neon colour with the new glow key, and the incense bowl catches it. Settings > Skins lists all twenty knock voices. See the skin format.

Plinth 1.6.0

Plinth 1.6.0 adds rhythms for auto-knock, an adjustable room size, positional sound, and trackpad feedback.

New

• Auto-knock rhythms. Auto-knock has a new Rhythm option, in the fish's menu and in Settings > Knocking > Auto-Knock:

  • Steady keeps an even pace, as before.
  • Quickening (起板) plays rounds of fifteen knocks that start slow and quicken into a roll, with a rest between rounds.
  • Natural varies each gap slightly, like a hand keeping time.

  Stop after 108 knocks counts every knock, whichever rhythm you choose.

• Room size. A new Space slider in Settings > Knocking sets the room the knock rings in, from a meditation room (禅房) to a great hall (大殿). The default sounds the same as in earlier versions.

• Positional sound. The knock comes from where the fish sits, panned left or right with its position on the screen. Knocks that are still ringing follow the fish as you drag it.

• Trackpad feedback. On a Force Touch trackpad, a knock by hand taps back as the mallet lands. macOS plays it only while a finger is on the trackpad.
