While looking for a way to archive my emails, I came across your tool. So far, it’s really great—I think it’s exactly what I’m looking for. However, there are a few things I’d like to suggest:

• I’d like to see a deeper folder structure. Currently, there seems to be only one folder without subfolders. I’d like more depth so I can preserve my existing structure from Thunderbird. In addition to search, folders are a key organizational element. This feature would be essential for me before I import everything from my Thunderbird archive.

• For example, from the Paperless DMS, I’m familiar with the option to save search criteria as a predefined view. I’d find that very helpful in your tool as well.

• Labels: As another organizational element, I’d find labels very helpful. I’m familiar with this from DMS Paperless as well and find it to be a very helpful organizational tool

I agree. On the Archive screen, the folder structure on the bottom left is way to small. My Thunderbird subfolder structure goes 4 levels down from the Inbox. EG. Inbox > Archived Emails > 2025 > Banking and in the small folder screen, I cant see anything after Inbox>Arch. Other than that I must say your app is amazing. If you can fix the folder structure idea, I will happily move from Bichon back to your app. You have the only app I could find that has the retention period option as well.

The displayed folder hierarchy may differ from your Thunderbird structure in certain cases. Subfolders are still displayed visually:

Below are some details regarding the folder tree in Mail Archiver:

1. Empty folders are not displayed
The folder structure is derived from the actually archived emails. A folder that exists in Thunderbird but contains no emails will not appear in Mail Archiver. It only appears after at least one email from that folder has been archived.

Example: In Thunderbird, you have INBOX > Projects > 2024, but only the 2024 folder contains emails. You will then see INBOX/Projects/2024 as a single flat entry—the intermediate Projects level is missing.

2. Separator discrepancies
Most IMAP servers use / as the folder separator (e.g., INBOX/Work/2024). However, some servers use . or |. Mail Archiver recognizes /, , and . as separators. For other characters, the hierarchy is not resolved correctly.

3. Special characters in folder names
If a folder name itself contains a separator (e.g., a folder named ACME Inc./Contracts), this may lead to unintended splitting in the display.

All your emails remain fully intact—only the visual tree representation may deviate from Thunderbird in the aforementioned edge cases. We are working on introducing a separate folder table to enable a 1:1 mapping of the structure.
