novelWriter has moved!

Hi all,

I'm in the process of moving novelWriter over to its own GitHub organisation. Mainly because it makes it easier to add more contributors and maintainers with specific access levels, which a personal project repository does not. But also because there may be more repositories added, and it makes sense to group them. I actually set up the organisation a year ago, but left it until now to complete the process.

It was tricky to find a suitable name for it. Especially since the name "novelWriter" is already taken on the GitHub root level. I landed on calling it "The Saga Software Project" with saga-soft as the slug. "Saga" is fitting because it is about story telling, and as a Norwegian the word itself is a part of my heritage.

I will also migrate the Launchpad repo which currently publishes to my personal PPA.

Update 2026-08-30

The move is complete. I'm also testing a new provider for packages, and I've pushed new ones for Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint:

If anyone want to test installing the new Debian packages, the new repo can be set up with:

curl -sLf 'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/saga-soft/testing/cfg/setup/bash.deb.sh' | sudo bash

It currently supports:

• Debian 12 (Bookworm) and 13 (Trixie)
• Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), 26.04 (Resolute) and 26.10 (Stonking)
• Linux Mint 22 (Wilma)

The script will try to auto-detect which one is correct. This can be overridden with:

curl -sLf 'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/saga-soft/testing/cfg/setup/bash.deb.sh' | sudo distro=DISTRO codename=VERSION bash
