Fake statusbar overlay?

An app Iconify lets you modify looks of status bar items, but it requires root.
But Essential can remove all status bar elements so I think an overlay that mimics statusbar with some customization could be useful.

I had the exact same thought as you and suggested it in another discussion article here, but unfortunately this is not exactly possible. As Sameera stated, there is no way to figure out what is behind the status bar to have it dynamically shift between black and white to contrast the elements behind it. However, if a way were to be figured out I would love to see it in action as a new feature because with the recent updates, Google has broke some of the ability to hide certain statusbar icons which is annoying. But I like your thinking and if this were to be any way possible I would love to see it.
