Upgrade ActiveFedora to Valkyrie
Currently, the Hyrax community supports Postgres, Fedora 4 and Fedora 6 as Valkyrie-compatible storage solutions. Valkyrie is designed to work with other solutions, but the community has not tried them yet. If you are using Valkyrie with another storage solution, we'd love to hear about it!
Choosing a storage solution will depend on your local needs and goals. Adopters have chosen storage solutions based on response time, institutional expertise and other factors.
Hyrax has three test environments which can be run in Docker:
- Fedora 4: Dassie
- Fedora 6: Sirenia
- Postgres: Koppie
The Samvera Community runs three test instances of Hyrax for the public to try:
- Fedora 4: https://dev.nurax.samvera.org
- Fedora 6: https://f6.nurax.samvera.org
- Postgres: https://pg.nurax.samvera.org
Freyja is the built-in migration adapter included in Hyrax 5.x. Freyja performs a "lazy migration" in which works and files are migrated to Postgres as they are accessed by users. Rob Kaufman gave a presentation on Freyja at Samvera Connect 2023.
Bulkrax is a bulk import and export tool used for Samvera software. Bulkrax enables migration of multiple files at once.
Frigg is the built-in migration adapter included in Hyrax 5.x, which is currently under construction. Frigg performs a "lazy migration" in which works and files are migrated to Fedora 6 as they are accessed by users. Rob Kaufman gave a presentation on Frigg at Samvera Connect 2023.

Q: Where can I get help?
A: The #hyrax channel in the Samvera Slack is a great place to ask questions. For Fedora-specific topics, try the #fcrepo channel. Also, consider joining the weekly Tech Call. Many folks who have worked on Hyrax migrations and Samvera Tech leadership regularly attend the call.
Q: Can I stay on ActiveFedora and still use Hyrax 5.x?
A: Several adopters have chosen to use ActiveFedora with Hyrax 5.x and experienced good results. Be aware that the community does plan to deprecate ActiveFedora in a near future release, so we do not recommend staying on ActiveFedora permanently.
