Adding Timings Programatically

Hi there,

Great library and easy to use and understand, thanks!

My particular use case has me wanting to add timing data to the slides automatically.. Is there a way of doing this? Say a timing of 20 seconds each slide.

There's no API support for this yet. You'd have to figure out what the XML looks like for this and see about manipulating it using lxml calls to add these in.

The general idea is to make a simple-as-possible presentation, like one slide, then make a copy of it and add an automation using PowerPoint. Then you can compare the XML of the two and usually pretty quickly get an idea what XML elements/attributes do the job. opc-diag is handy for this.

Another issue led me to this, original author was @BlueSpace-Lab, but I had to make minor modifications to get it to work for me.

from lxml import etree

p = "http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/presentationml/2006/main"
ele = etree.Element(etree.QName(p, "transition"), attrib={'spd': 'med', 'advClick': '0', 'advTm': str(duration)})
new_slide.element.xpath('.//p:clrMapOvr')[0].getparent().insert(-1, ele)

Where "new_slide" is the slide of course and "duration" is milliseconds.

... I experimented with this in md2pptx. This reply is not primarily intended to advertise that repo but...

... My reason for replying is to tell you it turned out to be quite complex to implement more than a single slide transition effect. If you look in the md2pptx code you'll see how I implemented it for a subset of transitions.

(It's also possible you'll find my implementation to be yeuchy. :-) Suggestions gratefuly received.)

@MartinPacker sorry, I found it as soon as I posted and edited my post. It was @BlueSpace-lab in issue #427 . So far, it's worked through my testing.

I'm working on a project that is a kiosk that updates several times a day. I'm making it flexible. Some of it is slides created with python-pptx, some are slides dumped by SSRS, some are created by hand, and it will also create standalone slides from images or PDFs and merge them in. The reason is to allow multiple people to contribute to it on the fly with very little trouble. The slide timings are based on the folder structure. So far the timings have worked perfectly. That's not the strict TDD that python-pptx was built on, but it works well for my needs.

Actually your use case might well be suited to md2pptx: Creating slides from Markdown. (But, again, that wasn't the point of my responding.)
