Improvements

  • Press F9 to open the focused selected file’s directory, or the selected folder, in a terminal.
  • Choose the terminal application in Preferences. macOS Terminal is the default; enter /Applications/iTerm.app to use iTerm2.
  • Show localized F2 Rename, F8 Trash, and F9 Terminal hints in the Files status bar, wrapping on narrow windows.
  • Ignore F9 during text editing or modal dialogs and prevent repeated launches while the key is held.

Install or upgrade

brew update
brew upgrade --cask seedds/tap/cardinal

First install: brew install --cask seedds/tap/cardinal.

The DMG targets Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 12 or later. The app is ad-hoc signed.

Validation

  • 305 frontend tests and 42 native tests passed; the existing real-Trash test remains opt-in.
  • TypeScript checking, frontend formatting, and the production build passed.
  • Terminal and iTerm2 shell working directories verified on initial and repeated launches, including paths with spaces, quotes, and Unicode.
  • Packaged app version, arm64 architecture, code signature, and DMG integrity verified.

Improvements

  • Preserve search input, visible results, and selection during background refreshes.
  • Coalesce filesystem refreshes and reuse identical in-flight Enter searches.
  • Load filenames without waiting for icons; retain icons and thumbnails across refreshes and reject stale icon responses.
  • Keep row hover highlighting stable while refreshed rows load.
  • Use the native macOS Trash API for F8 instead of Finder AppleScript.
  • Add optimized local launch and testing scripts, plus development and testing documentation.

Install or upgrade

brew update
brew upgrade --cask seedds/tap/cardinal

First install: brew install --cask seedds/tap/cardinal.

The DMG targets Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 12 or later. The app is ad-hoc signed.

Validation

  • 292 frontend tests, TypeScript checks, and production frontend build passed.
  • Rust workspace tests, native crate tests, Clippy, and formatting checks passed.
  • Packaged app version, arm64 architecture, and code signature verified.
  • Native Trash was previously verified with disposable files and folders.

Automated regressions cover refresh, selection, icons, and hover behavior. End-to-end desktop latency and sustained filesystem-activity behavior still need broader live confirmation; file-operation results may update after the filesystem event arrives.
