Custom Battery Charge Limits

Hello fellow community,

It is known that some and especially new devices don't support any battery charge limits other than 80%. (As in MyASUS you simply can't set anything except 80% or 100%)

In G-Helper you can drag battery slider to any value obviously, but it doesn't mean your firmware / device will follow it if it doesn't support it in a first place.

I wanted to restrict slider values only to supported options to avoid confusion.

Can you write your model name, and list values that you know it supports. Easiest way to verify if value is supported is to

• discharge your laptop lower than that value,
• set slider to desired value and monitor if it stops charging upon reaching it (approximately).

Yellow / Orange charging LED should change color to White (or just turn off) when device stops charging.

Note:

• By doing this test I lost 1% on battery health. I knew this would happen because i'm always with battery 100%. :)
• At the beginning, the laptop charge fast with 75W. At +80% the lapop charge decrase slowly at 50W,45W,40W,35W,30W etc ...
  At +98% the laptop charge is 5W only.

@Kikimahe great, good to know. Interesting that your device supports only range from 55% to 85%. I wonder if it's same for all TUFs or not.

As for your health, it's most probably cause windows just updated it's own battery calibration measurements (so you have noticed what was already the case)

G14 2024, GA403UI - Only 80%

I don't know if this works for all models, but I only get the "Fully smart charged" text and heart icon at the battery tray icon when I set a valid value of 80% when the battery is full. Perhaps this might help others to find their valid values more easily.

I took a bit of a closer look at the Windows settings vs. G-Helper settings.

So values less than 80% do work fine, but the BIOS doesn't report it to Windows correctly. So like, if you set it to 65%, it does stop charging, however, Windows still says it is charging via the icon in the System Tray (even though it isn't). This can further be seen from the "System > Power & battery" section, where it says "Smart charging is on" if you set it to 80%, but doesn't say so if you set it to any other value.

I personally think you should still leave the values that have worked for other people available from G-Helper, as the flexibility to set the battery charge to more levels outweighs Windows reporting it correctly. If you want to avoid complaints, maybe make the ability to ignore the limits a toggle in the Extra Settings section (that way you get fewer reports of it "not working", while people who are aware of this quirk can have access to the full options).

Are you sure that it starts charging after power off ?

You may be right regarding that. I've never actually tested, but noticed when I did things that required frequently restarting the device, the battery charge would start climbing past the set limit.

@Velgus i can allow 60-80 range for G14. But honestly whole reason I started this topic is cause i'm so fed up with accusations and insults in my side from people who just don't understand how limit work (i.e. that it's just a BIOS setting, not something app is managing) so I try to restrict UI only to options that are 100% supported. And MyASUS supports only 80% :|

That's fair, but like I mentioned, I think a separate toggle will help with that.

So like default to restricted values to what is 100% supported (so just 80% on the 2024 G14), but provide a way to unlock it. Maybe it can even be a Power User option (something like "ignore_charge_limit" : 1) that requires manually editing the JSON. That way everyone is happy, and you don't even have to worry about having specific "supported ranges" on each device, just stick with what MyASUS supports by default.

@Velgus ok. I have just pushed 0.176 where I have moved G14 2024 to "60-80" group. So you can set anything from 60 to 80 same as for TUF / G16 2024. Lets see what feedback it will get

Are you sure that it starts charging after power off ? Cause how 2022 model behaves (and most of other devices) - they reset all settings (including charging limit) when you reboot - i.e. the moment you start it again, it would start charging. But not before.

As for 2021 model GU603HR, I noticed that MyASUS itself cannot set the charge limit correctly. As I set 60% or 80% limit in MyASUS and then restart to BIOS, charging starts. Then exit BIOS and boot into Windows, charging stops at 59.5% or 79.5%.

TUF A15 FA506IHR - MyAsus only have two mode, are 80% and 100%. But when I tested with GHelper, this is the results:

50% - Continues to charge

In MyAsus, there is only an option to enable or disable charge limits (80%). When using the limiter in MyAsus, a "Fully smart charged" message and a heart icon appear in the battery tray. However, when using G-Helper's charge limiter and setting the limit to any value other than 80%, this icon does not show up.

Here are the results:

40%~50% - Continues to charge
55% - Stops charging
60% - Stops charging
65% - Stops charging
70% - Stops charging
75% - Stops charging
80% - Stops charging
85%~95% - Continues to charge

I double this answer. The @lordcookies87 answer (a bit above) about only 80% limit working isn't true, all limits 55% through 80% including them - work nicely, except for the fact "Smart Charging" icon with heart just isn't showed. It is displayed for 80% limit exclusively. Other than that, everything works: orange light becomes white, the charging stops, tooltip on hover displays "...% remained".

Frankly speaking, me too, I thought earlier only 80% works 😅
But no.
May be it's worth leaving a notification for user that though the "Smart charging" icon isn't present, in reality everything works as intended? But it's up to you, obviously.

Second, I found the energy bolt icon on the battery means not "charging", but rather "plugged in".

Third and the least, I found a little bug Microsoft has left for us 😁

This tooltip in popup window displays "Charging" no matter what, not reflecting the real charging state.

@AnFlare G-Helper doesn't control charging or any of those notifications anyhow directly.

It just runs same command as MyASUS (Asus Optimization Service) under the hood to tell BIOS to maintain specific value as a limit. That's it.

Thanks for confirming that only 55-80% limits work on your device. It seem to be default for all TUF models.

May I ask one question then? Is the 80% limit more hardware friendly to set than 55%, 60% etc., as they made icon for 80% only? Or it doesn't really matter?
My notebook works 99.9% of time plugged to the wall, btw.

@AnFlare i don't think there is much difference. You see smart charging icon only at 80% cause asus driver emits special notification back to windows only in that case (most probably cause in myasus you can't set anything else anyway)

I haven't used 90% and will report after work, but I'm sure that 50 percent works, it's my default since I started using G-helper, on that note 45, 55 and 60 works as well.

Using G-Helper, I can set the limit from 40% to 100% (the slider provides these values)

40% - Charging (the current charge % is 67)

70-85% - Stops charging

It seems like charging continues when the limit is lesser than 55% even though the charge is higher than the limit. However, a limit of 85% to 90% works.

I'm glad I'm finally able to help with something. I'm on Asus ROG Flow X13 2023 with AMD Ryzen 9 and RTX4070.
Can already confirm that 80, 85 and 90% are working fine, laptop stops charging and goes from orange to white LED. Will today charge at various levels, starting from 50% and edit this comment as I go.

Just a suggestion for the way people can test whether it's "officially" supported (ie. the BIOS reports to Windows) vs. unofficially "works" but isn't technically supported - maybe ask users to specifically check for whether Smart Charging gets enabled in "System > Power & battery" settings.

The settings page updates instantly when you change the charge limit, so users can just open it, and check each charge limit to see when it appears and when it doesn't.

It's actually separate things

• "Smart charging" icon in windows, is something Asus System Control Interface can send to windows as a notification. And it happens only when limit is exactly 80% (on almost all models that I have seen).
• Actual charging limit i.e. firmware stops device from charging - the only way to check if it's working, is literally observe if device keeps charging after reaching the limit set :) (by looking at orange LED or at charge rate in the app itself)

As for your question - no, charge limit is just one simple command that app can run on start to tell BIOS / firmware to maintain this charge value later :)

@ichephe hello. As most TUFs support 60-80 range only, to keep things simple and easy to communicate I have set it same for all TUF models. If I will be doing this individual per model - it will be a mess. There is no practical difference between 55 and 60 for your battery health at all.

Hi, please do not remove 40% option. It is working flawlessly on Asus Strix G16 (2023) model, G614JU, 328 BIOS. It is usefull because if laptop resets due to for ex. overclocking, it recharges above limit set , be it 40,60 or 80% until I enter Win after password input. It will go to 100% that way.
I am working with batteries and there is nothing wrong for it to be at 10% charge, anything above 50% is not optimal for long shelf life, when not used.

My TUF F16 FX607JI (2024) supports a charge limit of 95%. Before 0.173, it worked fine. But the new version of Ghelper only provides 80% of the limit,

Reporting on my ProArt P16 (HX 370 + RTX 4070):
85% and above - charging continuously
80% - charging stopped if at or above 80%, windows happy - heart icon on battery
55-75% - charging stopped if at or above set charge level but no heart icon
50% and lower - charging continuously

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2025)
With HX370 and 5070Ti, GA403WR-QS085W

Tested on 18th May 2025 with all latest updates and drivers attached:

Tested with original proprietary 200W charger.

Limits in %:
40, 45, 50 - doesn't work (just continues charging)
55, 60, 65, 70, 75 - works (stops charging)
80 - works (stops charging, activates Windows "Smart charging")
85, 90, 95 - doesn't work (usually just continued charging)

For some reason when I switched 75->80, the laptop didn't start charging from 75% until I plugged out and in again, even though orange charging indicator lit up after charging limit from 75 to 80.
Same happened for 80->85 change, but at that point it wasn't starting to charge even when I plugged out and in again. Only setting the limit to 100 started the charging process, but as soon as I return 85 as the limit, charging stopped completely:

UPD: Only after discharging the laptop below 80% and then pugging it in with 85% limit it started charging at all.

My 2025 G14 clearly is limited between 60-80% (and 100%). Of course, I want 90%! I'm guessing this isn't something that is going to change any time soon, eh?

@naokicc those limits are handled by firmware, and app UI intentionally restricts you to the supported values. 90% is not supported on most new devices.

@seerge it would be awesome if you could enable 55% for this notebook, since it is working and 60 % is currently the lowest value that I can set in G-Helper. Lower values aren't accepted by G-Helper and automatically reset to 60%.
