Mana is a programming language for describing, in text, how characters and events unfold in a game. You split the work into Actors and Actions and connect them with Requests.
If you are new, start by printing some text, then build a small event in which a guide talks and a gate opens. Even if you have never programmed before, you can learn from the beginning: how to create a source file, compile it, and fix errors.
- What is Mana?
- Writing a program as text
- Setting up Mana
- Your first Mana program
- Compiling, running and fixing errors
Then the Tutorial builds an event with Actors and Actions. If you are comfortable with the tools and the terminal, you can go straight to your first program.
| What you want to do | Where to read |
|---|---|
| Set up Mana and run it for the first time | Getting Started |
| Write code and build an event | Tutorial |
| Find examples you can run as they are | Finished code |
| Understand how Actors run and wait | Concepts |
| Look up exact syntax and rules | Language Reference |
| Embed Mana in a C++ application or game | Integration |
The lessons print text to the terminal so you can follow the order in which things happen. Connecting Mana to a game's graphics and sound is covered in the integration guide, on the game's side.
