I have been looking at the Jupyter governance docs for getting ideas on how to sketch this out. Although SimPEG is a much smaller project, I think there are some things that we should think about / discuss as a group cc @simpeg/simpeg-developers.

• BDFL(s): do we want to nominate a Benevolent Dictator(s) for Life for SimPEG? I am supportive of the Jupyter definition of the BDFL: basically, the BDFL is the decisive decision maker in the case where there is a deadlock in the Steering Council, or if the Steering Council asks the BDFL to be the decision maker on a given matter
• Steering council: do we want to specifically assign a steering council? This would be contributors who " produced contributions that are substantial in quality and quantity, and sustained over at least one year."

From our conversation this week, the next steps are to formalize what we have discussed in the suggested next steps document for a governance model.

From there, we can open up separate issues to discuss a mission statement, practices for onboarding + celebrating new contributors, and making some updates to the website to make contributors visible and highlight contributing organizations.
