We are thrilled to announce the official debut of MD3 New Tab. Built as a Material Design sister alternative to Fluent New Tab, this inaugural release establishes our core foundation: a privacy-first approach to permissions, lightning-fast rendering, and a lightweight footprint.

Features & Seamless Migration

  • 1-Click Fluent Migration: To make trying MD3 New Tab zero-effort, the extension natively accepts backup files exported directly from Fluent New Tab. Simply import your existing JSON file to instantly transfer your layout, names, and grid coordinates.
  • Flexible Grid System: Configure up to 40 shortcuts arranged in a fully customizable 4x10 grid.
  • Smart Essential Widgets: Built-in support for a customizable clock, date module, multi-engine search bar, and real-time weather forecasting.
  • Productivity Hub: Fast access to native web services from Google, Microsoft, and Proton directly through the integrated launcher.

Design & Privacy

  • Material Design 3 Soul: Styled around modern MD3 tokens (primary, surface, outline) featuring automatic light/dark theme switching based on system preferences.
  • Optional Permissions Model: To prioritize user privacy, external API access (such as Weather data) is strictly optional and will only be requested when you explicitly enable the feature.
  • Optimized Bundle Size: Shipped without heavy built-in wallpapers to keep the installation lightweight and ensure near-instantaneous load times.

Under the Hood

  • Modern Stack: Developed in TypeScript and bundled via Vite for modern asset optimization.
  • Proprietary Drag & Drop: Shipped with a custom, lightweight sorting solution that optimizes shortcut reordering and provides a highly responsive feel.
