I spent over 16 hours testing Clay in a structured way to understand its strengths and limitations. I began by signing up for the free trial and exploring the app at a high level, clicking through each area to see what functionality was available. My first tests were basic data searches, where I applied specific filters to validate accuracy. For example, I searched for my cohort classmates and instructors and was able to locate my Working with AI teacher and TA just by using filters. I repeated this process with past coworkers, customers, and companies, and found that when filters were applied correctly, the results were mostly accurate.
After confirming the basics, I moved into extended AI enrichments, creating my own prompts to test the quality of information returned. I asked for unique aspects of companies, GTM plans, revenue estimates, and competitive analysis. To avoid running out of credits, I limited myself to enriching a maximum of 15 rows at a time. Once I had tested standard enrichments, I began stress - testing the system with more complicated prompts. I asked Clay to perform complex web searches, which it handled well, but when I tried queries that required authentication (such as LinkedIn data), the system failed because it cannot log in or maintain sessions.
To figure out how to avoid these failures, I researched best practices and ran enrichments avoiding some custom prompts, using the default outputs as a baseline to measure performance. I then experimented with Clay's marketing campaign features, building emails and sequences to simulate outbound workflows. I was able to create campaigns but could not send them because my free trial account lacked business admin permissions required for bulk email sending.
Next, I tested Clay Agent by creating personalized workflows. I designed flows that generated custom images and automated enrichment steps, showing how Clay can be adapted for specialized use cases. I also tried the AI chatbot, using it to initiate searches and check results. While functional, I found this feature could benefit from refinement to improve usability and accuracy.
To summarize, my testing methodology was to start broad by exploring all sections of the app, then validate accuracy with known data using filters. I pushed boundaries with complex prompts to identify failure points, documented limitations when workflows attempted to access authentication required platforms, applied best practices to benchmark outputs, and simulated real use cases like campaigns, workflows, and chatbot interactions. This approach let me evaluate Clay thoroughly and show how its features perform under both normal and stress conditions.

Context: Many technology companies have outbound sales roles focused on finding leads. They often use tools like LinkedIn Sales Navigator, which provides useful information but makes for a time-consuming process that typically yields limited returns. Successful outbound sales requires both volume and quality of outreach, with even the best scenarios achieving only a 5 to 10% response rate. I wanted to test how Clay can automate and improve this process, producing high-quality contacts for potential leads.

Define your search filters for the demo.
For the purpose of this demo, I will focus on finding my UCSB MTM cohort classmates. To do this, I need to start inputting information to filter my search. The more filters you apply, the better the results. You need to know the specific attributes of your target audience for the search to work effectively. Some attributes may appear in LinkedIn profiles such as headlines, education, or keywords. Other factors might include companies, industry, company size, location, or city. You can also explicitly instruct Clay to exclude certain people or companies. Once the preview table displays the information you want, click Continue. -
Enrich your data.
- You can choose from different options such as using AI to enrich each row per person, finding work emails, identifying the core values of the company they work in, running a GTM analysis, finding mobile phone numbers, or locating a person's GitHub, Instagram, and even events they have attended.
- For a basic table, you may choose to find work emails, use the Enrich People's Data option to retrieve their picture, name, title, and organization, and summarize LinkedIn profiles for unique aspects.
- For a more advanced search, you may use Clay Agent to find a person's Twitter handle (people are often more open on Twitter/X than on other social media), their GitHub repository if they are coders, their current company, events they have attended, and even identify recent shocks that could negatively impact their company.
- This information is especially useful when you are trying to understand your potential leads and reach out to them in a personalized way.

Create personalized messages.
- Based on the content you just foundfor example, their LinkedIn profile you can ask ChatGPT to identify unique aspects about this person. Then, create a message that highlights those traits and explains why they should consider accessing your technology product. For the sake of this exercise, the product will be a SaaS learning software for university students.
- Launch your emailing campaign.
- Now that you have tailored messages for your leads, its time to create your emailing campaign. Click on Action, select Exports, and then choose Emailing Campaign.

- As I input specific filters into my search, including country, region, and MTM keywords, the results were mostly accurate. From the 14 contacts returned, all had been part of MTM at some point. To achieve 100% accuracy for only my cohort, I should have added more filters.

- I chose to enrich the data by searching for my contacts emails and LinkedIn profiles. Overall, it did a good job: it retrieved 85% of the pictures correctly and 70% of my cohort members emails accurately.
- I also used AI to identify unique features of their profiles, and reviewing events they had participated in (this did not work very well, and I will revisit it in the failure section). I then created unique emails for each student based on AI, giving each a personalized message that highlighted their unique capabilities and explained why they should use my AI tool.
- Unique aspects were overall good, but may be unreliable (as all AI generated content is). In my case, as shown in the example below, I do not currently have a strong network in startups. These inputs and base prompts need to be reviewed in order to improve. I used the template enhancing action, but creating your own prompt may be beneficial. For my cohort members, since I have prior knowledge of their background, it produces sufficiently good outputs for at least 60%.

- I produced a flow to send emails to all of the contacts in the table, based on the personalized email I built with enhancements.

To make a good enough table, it took me two hours. I've worked closely with BDRs (business development representatives) before and with outbound marketing, and for them, it takes at least 20 minutes to gather good enough information for each contact. So, completing the same 14 accounts would take them about 4 to 5 hours.

Data enrichment accuracy:Searching for emails and LinkedIn profiles worked reasonably well, retrieving about 85% of pictures correctly and 70% of cohort members emails accurately. This shows solid coverage, though not perfect.

AI generated features and events: AI highlighted unique aspects of profiles, but event participation data was not reliable and will be revisited in the failure section. Despite this limitation, the enrichment allowed me to create personalized emails for each student, connecting their unique capabilities to the AI tool.

Reliability of unique aspects: While the AI produced generally good insights, they were sometimes unreliable (for example, its assessment of my startup network was not accurate). Inputs and base prompts require ongoing refinement to improve consistency and trustworthiness.

Cohort specific performance: For my cohort members, prior knowledge of their background allowed me to double check the AI's outputs. The unique aspects were about 60% accurate, so as a result most of the emails were relatively good.

Verdict:
For outbound sales, where the objective is volume, good enough information is often sufficient. As with other methods, databases may be outdated, so the information may not be perfect. According to my findings, Clay can be an excellent tool for sending massive outbound sales campaigns, as it was able to produce accurate information in most cases, as explained earlier.

- After applying the following filters to my search, Industry set to Software Development, Company Size greater than 5,000 employees, Location set to United States, and selecting only publicly traded companies, I limited the results to 15 companies. Of these, 7 are actual CRM providers, 2 are business application platforms, and the remaining are complementary technologies. Based on this breakdown, the results were approximately 60 % accurate when business applications are included as valid CRM-related outcomes.To achieve 100 percent accuracy, I should have added filters to exclude certain companies using keywords such as LMS or connector.

- Enriched your data using the suggested enrichments: Enrich Company and Research Company ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) with AI. Fourteen out of fifteen logos were correct; one was not found. Based on separate research, Clay tends to overestimate employee counts by approximately 1,000 to 10,000. Nevertheless, the ballpark figures are directionally accurate.
- The Ideal Customer Profile seems accurate as well. I reviewed companies I know, including SAP, Salesforce, and HubSpot, and the results appeared reasonably accurate. It's also helpful that Clay provides a section called Reasoning, which allows you to evaluate why it generated a particular answer.
- For advanced enrichment, I used Determine Company Revenue Model, Company GTM Strategy Analysis, and the CRM comparison to NetSuite. Overall, the analysis was very complete, it showed reasoning and provided justification. I will attach examples of SAP's reasoning for pricing, GTM strategies, and the comparison versus NetSuite, all supported by Clay's explanation. When verifying against my own knowledge of SAP, and Netsuite, based on my experience working with business applications, the output appears accurate.

To make a good enough table, it took me one hour. For entrepreneurship, I had to conduct an industry analysis for my idea and research three customers in depth, which took almost three hours. Clay produces good enough results in a shorter amount of time.

Verdict: For initial market research, ballpark figures are sufficient to establish a reliable foundation. While competitor strategy analysis can be time consuming, it is highly valuable for understanding positioning and differentiation. Clay proves useful in this context, as it summarizes key advantages company by company, providing a clear overall view without requiring exhaustive manual effort. This makes it a strong use case for early stage research and competitive assessment.

Context: Create your own agent to populate custom fields in Clay, specifically tailored to your role. Solution Engineers must deliver different demos depending on the customer. For this use case, I created an agent that provides information about the customer and guides the Solution Engineer on how to tailor the demo accordingly.

Process:
- On the Clay Agents tab, create a new agent using the Create Manually button.
- Once the Agent tab is open, choose the model you want your agent to use. If you select ChatGPT 5 or any newer model, you will need an MCP connection, which can be obtained through a third party. Otherwise, you can choose ChatGPT 4. Then, input the prompt you want your agent to be based on. In this case, I used the following:
I am a Solution Engineer at Salesforce, and I want an agent where I can input the name of a company and receive structured insights that include its mission, industry, and core business activities, along with common industry pain points and the technologies it uses. The agent should then provide tailored recommendations on how to deliver a Salesforce demo to that company, highlighting which features or solutions to emphasize based on their challenges and technology stack, and suggesting discovery questions that help uncover needs and align the demo effectively. The output should be concise, demo ready, and include reasoning for each recommendation so I can understand why the agent suggested it. Save your agent.

In the Home page, create a new table or use an existing one. For the sake of this exercise, I used a previously created table due to limited credits. Create a new column, click on Add Enrichments, then select Use AI, choose your AI agent, and run it. The agent will process every row in the table. In this case, I ran it through a previously created table, and for every company it generated a tailored demo based on the specific company needs.

Create agents when you need to apply tailored enhancements to your data on a regular basis. Agents are particularly effective for recurring workflows where consistent, structured outputs are required. They can enrich company profiles, surface industry pain points, analyze technology stacks, and generate demo recommendations. By automating these enhancements, agents save time, improve accuracy, and provide repeatable insights that can be adapted to different contexts without rebuilding the process each time.
- Output:
- The initial test of the agent showed promising results. It provided relevant recommendations for the demo for Shopify, identifying the common pain point for these kinds of platforms as conversion and retention of core merchants. It recommended showcasing the Marketing Cloud Journey demo, which triggers from incomplete checkout and order events to send specific emails encouraging customers to return. This is valuable insight.

- I ran the test with the use case 2 table and received tailored recommendations for demoing Salesforce products to selected companies. For Adobe, which was identified as an LMS, the response followed a clear structure: Adobe's basic information such as its mission, sources with links for each item, the industry, the steps taken to gather the information, demo focus areas, discovery questions, and industry pain points. The entire process was completed in 101 seconds and produced tailored recommendations.

Analyzing a company for a demo usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes, based on past experience preparing demos for other technologies, since it involves investigating the company, its industry context, pain points, and aligning demo focus areas. The agent produced a complete structured response in just 101 seconds. What normally takes up to half an hour was condensed into less than two minutes.

Verdict: When you need tailored recommendations for every industry, this approach gives you a real head start in demo planning. Analyzing company context and aligning demo focus areas usually takes time, but the agent delivers structured insights in minutes. It breaks down missions, pain points, and CRM solutions while showing its reasoning and sources, which adds credibility. Instead of spending hours piecing things together, you get demo ready outputs company by company. That makes it a strong use case for accelerating demo prep and making sure recommendations are accurate and industry specific.
- What I Tried: I asked Clay to generate a summary of people's profiles using two different methods: first, by pasting the link into an OpenAI prompt, and second, by using ClayAgent, which is optimized for search. In both cases, I received an error message stating that Clay cannot access LinkedIn content due to login restrictions, and therefore cannot retrieve LinkedIn profiles in real time.
Why It Failed:
To retrieve people's information from LinkedIn, you can either build the workflow yourself or use a prebuilt workflow in Clay. If you choose to build your own workflow and it isn't set up correctly, you may encounter limitations. For example, you might be relying on an API service (such as ChatGPT-4 without web access) that doesn't support online research. If the flow attempts to access LinkedIn directly, it will fail because it has no authentication capabilities.
Additionally, if you select the wrong data provider, some do not maintain active sessions or cookies to scrape LinkedIn data in real time. Certain LinkedIn profile fields are only visible when logged in, which these providers cannot access. These restrictions exist to ensure compliant and secure data collection.

Lesson Learned:
- Building your own LinkedIn enrichment workflow in Clay can fail due to authentication limits, provider restrictions, or reliance on APIs without web access. To avoid these issues, use Clay's prebuilt Enrich Person from Profile workflow, which integrates multiple prospecting sources and reliably retrieves LinkedIn data through compliant providers.

- What I Tried:
I tried to create a personalized summary of the unique traits in each person's profile using Clay's Unique Aspects template, but the response was inaccurate in my case. It generated a summary of my profile that listed expertise in technology commercialization and entrepreneurship education, a strong network within the startup and innovation ecosystem, and a proven track record in successful project management and collaboration. Of those three points, only the third was true, which shows that while the template can produce structured outputs, its accuracy may vary depending on the profile being analyzed.
Why It Failed:
The model used for this built in template is GPT 4.0 mini, which has information only up until 2023. This may be one reason the results are inaccurate. In addition, this model was built primarily for optimization and may not always produce consistent results. To achieve better outcomes, you can modify the workflow to use a more advanced model.
To check for accuracy, I then ran the same workflow using GPT -5.0. The result was more accurate based on my recent LinkedIn activity: "Unique Aspects: Interdisciplinary program integrating technology, business, and entrepreneurship within a top -tier research university; Flagship New Venture Competition launching student startups with funding, mentorship, and investor exposure; Strong industry partnerships connecting students with tech leaders, VCs, and innovation ecosystems globally."
There is still some opportunity for improvement.

Lesson Learned:
When I tested Clay, I noticed that the built in template uses GPT 4.0 mini. This model only has information up to 2023 and was designed more for optimization than accuracy, which explains why some of the outputs, like the Unique Aspects summary, were inconsistent. The main lesson is that you should always check which model is being used when generating AI content, because the model directly affects accuracy. If the model's knowledge stops at 2023, the output may not be reliable.
Although it is brilliant, Clay eliminates much of the struggle involved in researching contacts, leads, and accounts, since it handles all the tedious work for you. For example, outbound sellers may need to research and reach out to more than 200 accounts or people in a week, often receiving only about 20 replies. Yet in doing this manually, they implicitly learn more about the industry, pick up catchphrases that help engage prospects, and push themselves to improve each time. This process requires total focus, but over time, the struggle of cold outreach builds the knowledge they need to run conversations effectively with limited contact. By using Clay, which automates everything, including outreach, outbound sellers may miss the opportunity to truly understand their customers, to learn what works and what doesn't, and to continually refine their methods. This is why experienced outbound sellers often share tips with junior colleagues on how to improve response rates, insights that come from the hard work of trial and error.
It does both, preserve and elimitante.
Clay eliminates complexity for certain use cases, making tasks faster and easier to execute. For instance, when conducting market research, people can gain a 360 degree understanding of their industry and sector, identifying competitors, trends, and positioning strategies that help them defend their product or service more effectively. However, because Clay automates much of this process, it can also create the false impression that you are learning when in reality you may not be building the deeper contextual knowledge that comes from doing the research yourself. Clay provides efficiency, but it can unintentionally reduce the opportunity to develop the expertise needed to interpret and challenge the data on your own.
Nevertheless, if you want to use Clay for outbound sales effectively, you need to lean into the complexity and build a solid understanding of the market you are targeting. That context allows you to spot outliers or hallucinations more easily and gives you the ability to reflect after each campaign on the actions you took and which filters or enrichments could make the next round stronger. The real value comes from that cycle of testing, adjusting, and improving, because that is how you actually get better at outreach, not just automate it.
Clay may eliminate, to a certain extent, human collaboration. When new sellers, marketing professionals, or product managers join a company, they typically shadow experienced colleagues to learn effective communication and outbound strategies. Because human abilities are limited, it is difficult to reach the high outreach volume that Clay can achieve, so novices have traditionally relied on experts to pick up the tips and tricks that make outreach more effective. However, since Clay guarantees the volume, the novice to expert relationship becomes less necessary, as the platform reduces the need for mentorship in building outreach skills.
Who Should Use This:
Business Development Representatives working inbound and outbound sales, and Marketing Specialists running outreach campaigns, often need to send information with more emphasis on volume than quality. That balance matters, because while volume drives reach, the structure and intent behind each message keep it relevant.
Who Should Avoid This:
For account management, when you need quality and not quantity, for example when reaching out to Fortune 500 CEOs to invite them to a meeting, automation may not be useful. You need a truly tailored message to achieve a successful connection, and with these tools you risk using the wrong model or relying on unreliable data sources. For personalized messages, it is better to research using multiple methods, use personal anecdotes rather than automating outreach. That is the kind of work an account manager may need to do, which means Clay may not be the right resource for them.
Hidden Costs:
- Clay is a very difficult tool to learn correctly. It took me a couple of weeks just to start understanding all of its functionalities and its usefulness.
- Cost: It is an expensive tool. The next version after the free plan costs 130 USD per month and each AI enrichment consumes a lot of tokens, making the free version unsustainable if the desired result is volume.
- It relies on third party data, which may not always be reliable and can produce poor results.
- It also depends on too many connections to third party apps and tools. This means if LinkedIn is down, Clay is down; if OpenAI is down, Clay is down; and if OpenAI produces a bad model, it will affect all of Clay's results.
My Verdict: [Would you use this professionally? Why/why not?]
For outbound sales, through email and social media, it can definitely help me reach more contacts with good enough messaging to capture their initial attention so I can take it from there. It is an extremely valuable tool, and the AI enrichments do make the information better. It can be a far more rewarding use of time than researching contact by contact, especially when the response rate is only one in ten during a good week. This way, I can focus on higher-value activities such as initial meetings with customers for the actual demo, where I can prove technical value and concentrate on what I enjoy most-showing value through technology.
