Reintroduce option to merge from a specific branch

Whilst I appreciate the ease of adding a merge option to the main context menu in 2026.12, it does break some workflows for me.

Would it be possible to additionally keep the existing merge option in the branch-specific context menus?

For example:

I would like to merge from test, but I no longer have that option.

This also removes the option to distinguish between merging from the remote origin/... branch and the local branch. Whilst this doesn't meaninfully change anything in practice, I prefer the semantics of being able to explicitly select the branch to merge from.

I do not understand. Branches are just pointers. When both A and B reference the same revision (commit), there's no difference between merging A into current and merging B into parent.

Yes, as mentioned there is no meaningful difference, but I prefer the semantics of selecting exactly.

It also does help with auto-generating the right commit message, as the alternative workflow is to merge from the wrong branch (can't choose!), edit the merge commit message to the right branch, and then continue.
