Nintendo 64 Emulations

  • The default emulator is the Retroarch Parallel 64 emulator; however, where compatible, the standalone mupen64plus with the rice video plugin is faster.

  • To change to mupen64plus:

    • Select Emulator Settings
    • Select N64
    • Change EMULATOR to STANDALONE-RICE
  • Mupen64Plus

  • Parallel 64

  • The in-game controls for both emulators are consistent.

Ergonomics

When using a real N64 joystick, there are three modes:

  • Analogue and Z Trigger (left).
  • D-Pad and Analogue (centre).
  • D-Pad and Left Trigger (right).

For this reason, Z Trigger is mapped to L1 and Left Trigger is mapped to L2. This mapping makes the G80CA-MB more ergonomic for playing most N64 games.

Files and configuration

To support per-game configurations on first boot, the play_joystick entry is extracted from/opt/mupen64plus/InputAutoCfg.ini and copied to /roms/n64/control/Sample.ini. The file /opt/mupen64plus/InputAutoCfg.ini is copied to a separate file, deleted, and a symbolic link is created from /roms/n64/control/Sample.ini to /opt/mupen64plus/InputAutoCfg.ini

For detailed views of the configuration files (e.g., mupen64plus.cfg, Default-InputAutoCfg.ini), check the GitHub repository:
